We're going to need much more information than that to give you a helpful answer.
- What kind of razor
- What kind of hone/hones
- How much honing/shaving experience do you have
- What honing directions were you following
- What kind of condition was the razor in when you started
Welcome to SRP!
Can you give more information about what you know about honing?
Have you read much in the Wiki or the honing FAQ?
What hones did you use?
What kind of razor did you hone?
Did the razor shave properly before you honed it?
How did you hone it?
i have a dovo Tortoise i have a ice bear KING waterstone #4000 when i got information from the company that i bought my razor from they told me to use a 20* degree angle when honeing when i bought my razor it worked fine it cut like butter now i think i screwed it bad
You finished honeing on the 4k? Yup that would be a bit rough on the face. Do you have any higher grit stones or paste? I'm not sure here but the lowest grit stone I have honed and shaved off was an 8k.
no i dont thats all i have they told me to get the 4000 and thats what they sold me so i need to get a 8000
What company sold you the razor and gave you that advice? Not that it makes any difference, I'm just curious.
Rest assured that whatever mistakes you may have made thus far, you have found the ideal place to get answers and help.

MODERATOR EDIT: I am removing the link from the URL above because people clicking on it have reported virus warnings.
Yes, that's wrong and yes you screwed (slightly) your razor. The purpose of the spine is to lay on the hone so that the spine and the edge touch the hone. THAT is how the proper angle of the edge is determined exactly.
You definitely need to do some reading in the Wiki. Don't worry, you'll be fine and no harm was done.
Also, BTW, I suggest you never, ever, ever listen to any more advice from the place from which you bought your razor. If they told you all you needed was a 4k hone and to use it holding the razor that way, then they know nothing about how to use a straight.
Just think :p after you go through the Wiki you'll know alot more and probably have alot more questions :) (Now would be a good time to burn your credit cards :p )
Don't worry. I've read the Wiki entry on honing a couple of times already and I don't even have a hone of any kind yet.
You did well to realise there was a problem. Well, it may have been painfully obvious, but you had the good sense to do something about it rather than struggle on, and you arrived here. Well done. You now know more about sharpening razors than the person who first gave you advice.
Knives are sharpened with the back lifted.
Straight razors are sharpened with the spine touching the hone.
The harm that was done should be easily fixed. Whatever you do, don't take it to someone who sharpens knives. They might use a grinding wheel, and ruin the blade.
I got a PM that warned that this link has spyware. Could someone in authority delete that post?
Really? I didn't get anything when I clicked it using Firefox and Nod32. I think I might start my Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware scans tonight if that's the case.
I didn't click it. I'm just relaying what I was told in a PM.

Evol, welcome to the SRP!:)
You did exactly right by posting a thread in this forum. The advice you have been given is correct. Please read the Wiki on honing, it has a wealth of information.
The next thing to do is to send out your razor to one of the guys here for honing. If no one has sent you a PM offering to hone your razor then look in the Classifieds under Services and you will find listings of guys who will hone your razor for a nominal fee.
After you receive your razor back, freshly honed, then perform 30-50 round trip laps on a plain leather hanging strop, lather up and have a nice shave.
keep us posted,:)
I've posted on this before, there are several schools when it comes to using electrical tape on the spine, so you might want to search on that topic before you decide. You do not *need* to use tape. Some folks will use tape if they have an etched or decorated spine, or if they are trying to set a double bevel (an advanced honing techinque), or just if the idea of spine wear bothers them.
Some say the spine wear matches the reduction of the length of the blade, keeping the optimal bevel angle, but I really don't know if that is valid or not.
My point is don't worry about the tape unless the idea of some spine wear bothers you. Just note, once you use tape, you need to keep using it until you decide to fully reset the bevel.
I have 3 razors, two I don't use tape, one I do because I've been messing around with the double-bevel thing...
Happy honing!
