We're going to need much more information than that to give you a helpful answer.

    • What kind of razor
    • What kind of hone/hones
    • How much honing/shaving experience do you have
    • What honing directions were you following
    • What kind of condition was the razor in when you started

    Welcome to SRP!

Can you give more information about what you know about honing?
Have you read much in the Wiki or the honing FAQ?
    What hones did you use?
What kind of razor did you hone?
Did the razor shave properly before you honed it?
    How did you hone it?

You finished honeing on the 4k? Yup that would be a bit rough on the face. Do you have any higher grit stones or paste? I'm not sure here but the lowest grit stone I have honed and shaved off was an 8k.

When you say a 20 degree angle, do mean you held the blade off the hone at a 20 degree angle?

What company sold you the razor and gave you that advice? Not that it makes any difference, I'm just curious.

Rest assured that whatever mistakes you may have made thus far, you have found the ideal place to get answers and help.
