Knives are sharpened with the back lifted.
Straight razors are sharpened with the spine touching the hone.

The harm that was done should be easily fixed. Whatever you do, don't take it to someone who sharpens knives. They might use a grinding wheel, and ruin the blade.
i was about to take it to a man who sharpens knive thanks for stopping that man i woudl be screwed

I got a PM that warned that this link has spyware. Could someone in authority delete that post?

Really? I didn't get anything when I clicked it using Firefox and Nod32. I think I might start my Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware scans tonight if that's the case.

I didn't click it. I'm just relaying what I was told in a PM.

I removed the link and left the website as a text only with a note.

    Evol, welcome to the SRP!
You did exactly right by posting a thread in this forum. The advice you have been given is correct. Please read the Wiki on honing, it has a wealth of information.

The next thing to do is to send out your razor to one of the guys here for honing. If no one has sent you a PM offering to hone your razor then look in the Classifieds under Services and you will find listings of guys who will hone your razor for a nominal fee.
After you receive your razor back, freshly honed, then perform 30-50 round trip laps on a plain leather hanging strop, lather up and have a nice shave.

    keep us posted,

I've posted on this before, there are several schools when it comes to using electrical tape on the spine, so you might want to search on that topic before you decide. You do not *need* to use tape. Some folks will use tape if they have an etched or decorated spine, or if they are trying to set a double bevel (an advanced honing techinque), or just if the idea of spine wear bothers them.

Some say the spine wear matches the reduction of the length of the blade, keeping the optimal bevel angle, but I really don't know if that is valid or not.

My point is don't worry about the tape unless the idea of some spine wear bothers you. Just note, once you use tape, you need to keep using it until you decide to fully reset the bevel.

I have 3 razors, two I don't use tape, one I do because I've been messing around with the double-bevel thing...

    Happy honing!

    -Chief
