The only thing I'd add to the excellent advice already here, is to not over think it.
From the first time I asked people what hones I should get, to when I finally bought my first set of hones was about 3 months. In the end, the deciding factor for which hones I got was a really good sale.
I don't think you can go wrong, as long as you stick with a "known" hone. Whether you change to the full norton set (only $115 at amazon), add a naniwa for bevel setting, a shapton, or even a DMT1200. All of them have been used to great success by a TON of people around here.
