To be honest, I never do less the 100 strokes on my finishing stone (Portugese slate 6000-8000). I never overhoned a razor. Watching the bevel under a loupe and doing the HHT for orientation, I would say, the blades need that amount of strokes. The worst thing that could happen is, that I have wasted a couple of minutes. After the stone, I do 30 laps on Chromium Oxide and the result is always to my complete satisfaction. Most natural (finishing) work quite slow and something around 100 strokes won't do any bad to the edge, according to my experience.
I have never worked with synthetic finishing stones. Perhaps these are more aggressive and less strokes are appriate.
