Nagura Stones and Norton's

Until recently I've have been using 1200 grit sand paper on my Norton 8k to work up a slurry while honing. A respected member of our razor community has suggested I use a Nagura stone instead. While browsing the Japanwoodworker web site I came upon two styles. One natural the other man made. Besides the price difference what if any are the differences of these two Nagura stones. They make mention of the more expensive one being composed of a naturally occurring chauk. Will this harm a Norton 8k in any way?:shrug: See the link I've included. http://japanwoodworker.com/product.a...&dept_id=13260 I also thought a Nagura should be of similar grit to the stone one is honing with. I hear about how you guys with Belgiums will occasionally use a bout to work up a slurry on your stones.

I'm not sure which woodworking site it is on but there are Nagura stones specifically for Nortons.

I don't think I've ever seen a Norton nagura, Tony. The ones I ordered to use with my Nortons were Ice Bear artificial nagura stones. Not saying Norton doesn't make a nagura, I've just never seen one. BTW, I got that razor in...it's a real beauty! Thanks a bunch.

Don't tell me I should be using a Nagura stone! What's the benefit there? I can get the edge with water alone.

X-man, I seem to get better feed back on my Norton 8k when I have slurry raised on the stone. I know people will say the norton does not need a slurry to work but I still notice a difference in the quality of the hone. I feel my razors come out sharper. I can get my razors to pass the HHT when I do it this way.

The nagura is a great way to clean it off, too.

As long as the nogura is softer than the hone medium it won't harm it but I really don't see the advantage of using a nogura on the Norton. It might just load up the hone. Maybe on some of the really fine artificial stones like 12K and up it might be more appropriate but I'm no expert. I've only used a nogura on a 12K japanese stone and personally I've never noticed a difference in the honing process whether I used the nogura or not.
