Thread: honing my big wedge

i finally sat down and started to hone up that monster wedge i bought a few months back. i have read that it can take a while to set the bevel. of that i have no doubt that i am in for a long process, but i have nothing else planned on this hot afternoon. the only downside is that upon inspection of the bevel, i noticed micropitting in it, so that is definately gonna add much time to my endevor.

if you love honing doesn't matter what is front of you you will get it done.
Wedges will take more time then hollow ground blades.
As long as wedge doesn't have warping etc you should be ok.

1st of all, good luck on you new project, hope all goes well for you!!
2nd how much PVC tape are you going to put on or are you going to "Follow The Body" of the blade removing all that metal required?? I was just wondering as you can probably tell, I'm no Wedge excpert!! [not to good at spelling, either]

i just set the bevel on a wedge last night, had micropitting too.. Taped the spine got it on a 220 and used firm pressure. Just long enough to get to clean metal and no more. Then up to the 1k to smooth out the 220 grit stuff until it shaved arm hair.

I'm not saying this is right and this is my first wedge and third honing job, but it worked for me.

PS: So glad the title of the thread wasn't a euphemism

i am using one layer of electrical tape. removing the micropitting on the bevel, well that is a slow process for me, i use my 1k to do it. and sham, it is one of those things that, i can work on it for a bit, take a break, and come back, i do enjoy the process, its a great feeling to know that i went from a very dull butter knife feel on the razor to a WOW, that was a smooth shave, if you know what i mean.

That was exactly the right thing to do.
