Congrats! Thats the idea. Remember its not the light touch thats bad its the wobbly! One wobble will undue 10 good strokes.
I curl my pinky under the spine, hold the shank balanced between index pad and thumb pad (like a fulcrum) and this forces the extremely heavy blade (compared to the light scales) into the stone with an exact weight (the weight of the blade) on every stroke forward and back. Failure is nearly impossible! :-)
