first experience with honing ! help!
hello i have bought a belgian hone... the question is :
how should i hone? in the direction of the cutting blade or as a stropping movement?
how i check the right cutting power of the blade after honing??

When you hone, you do it with the edge leading, which is the opposite to the stropping motion. If your blade is an e-bay piece, it will take ages to hone with the coticule. Hone until it can cut a hanging hair by touching it and then give it another 20 strokes on the coticule for good luck and try shaving with it.

You should probably get it honed for you by one of the masters here first and concern yourself with upkeep for a while and then work up your honing skills on a few "seconds" razors.
What razor do you have?
Where do you live?
PM me if you're willing send it to Canada and wait for it to get here and back, I'll hone it for you. If somebody closer offers you might want to take them up on what would otherwise undoubtedly be a frustrating endeavour for a guy who wants his first straight razor shave in the 21st century.

You should never trust what's advertised. DOVO people give their razors some basic sharpening and once in a blue moon the piece turns out shave ready, but the rule of thumb is that you have to hone the new blades that you acquire unless it's a Bill Ellis piece.

That Dovo will likely be close, but not quite shave ready. I recommend that you get some cheep practice razors (from eBay maybe) to work up your honing skills before attempting to sharpen your Dovo.

Hones come in 4 grades
Coarse 1000 grit
Medium 4000 rit
Fine 8000 grit
Finishing 10,000 plus
The coticule is a finishing hone. You need a medium and fine hone first. Do yourself a big favor and have someone hone the razor for you. Then you will know what sharp really is.
