Hi everyone,

I've been shaving with a straight razor now for only a few months. I am still struggling with multiple passes and I am starting to think that it is somewhat beyond my control. Since I never got the razor honed by a professional after buying it new, I am hoping this is part of the problem (aside from still learning the proper techniques). I don't yet want to buy honing stones or worry about learning that procedure when I am still a novice in the shave department. So I was hoping someone could tell me where/who to take my razor to, to get it sharpened by someone who knows what they're doing.

I'm live in Western Michigan, specifically, Holland. I was hoping there would be someone/someplace nearby, but I don't know who to talk to about this.

I know we have members in Michigan, but I'm not sure where they are at in relation to you.
You can check the member's map (it's under the community link on the menu above) and see who is nearby.
You can also put a pin on the map for yourself, which makes it a little easier for people to recommend who to turn to for help in your part of the world.

The closest is really as close as your Mail Box. When you ship the razor out I found that the $5 flat rate boxes are best. Use filler in the box to keep the razor from bouncing around. For a few dollars more than a padded envelope it is well worth it. There is a difference in edges between people and sometimes from the same person but a nicely honed edge from anyone with more than basic experience sould be better than a factory edge. Good luck and don't limit yourself to Michigan services. Keeping it in the lower 48 US would be a good idea though.

I'm in southwest Michigan (Near New Buffalo). I'm honing my own razors and I'm satisfied with my efforts. I would be glad to look at you razor but with the price of gasoline (you're at least one hour from me) I think you should send it to Lynn at Straght Razor Designs to be honed. For $25.00 it will be honed by "The Man" and you will know what a razor should shave like. I sent my first razor to him and was amazed at his magic (enough to buy hones and try to mimic his results). Everything you need to know about straight razor shaving can be found on this forum and if you still have questions, just ask. These gentlemen will not steer you wrong.

Thanks for the input everyone. In case anyone was wondering, I ended up sending mine off to the main man himself (Lynn Abrams) to get the job done. I'm expecting it back fairly soon.
