[Beware: Sarcasm ahead] How come we now pick on his marketing strategy? Didn't we agree to hate him for his honing video?
Come on guys. This man has started a business and he is very successful with it.
Give him at least credit for that. You are in no way forced to take his class or support him.
He offers a service and since I have no idea what that service usually includes (maybe forging classes or whatever)
I will not question why he asks 3.000$ for it. What I heard was a clear invitation for a mod to "pick his brain".
He listened to what we had to say, now we should listen to what he has to say.
I will not question the decision GSsixgun makes regarding the invitation, but at least somebody should shave
himself with a razor sharpened by this man until judging his technique. If what he achieves with this minimalistic setup and technique is acceptable I think he succeeded.
He obviously belongs to the outdoorish and more practical type of man and that is perfectly fine.
I am sure there are plenty of ways we both could learn from each other since I am absolutely positive
that there are different ways to get a good shave, which ultimately is our goal
No matter what technique he presented, in his invitation video I have not heard one single word
of disrespect (the remark about duct tape mirrors the tone of this conversation so far and is correct).
I heard a man willing to put his money where his mouth is.
I am no fan of Mr Carter (to be honest I donīt even know what he does)
but the intensity he has been discredited with does not match the potential damage he could have inflicted
if his technique was indeed wrong and harmful to newbies
What's wrong about using an opportunity? You could put it this way: He tries to create an opportunity to undo the (probably minor) damage that has been done to his business because of the discredit that has been put on him
I donīt see a problem in that
Carter doesn't help his own case when he says in his video he got a better shave off an axe (or some other implement) than his straight shaver.
To comment on the axe: I did that with a high quality fiskars log splitting axe. The thing in principle the same as a gigantic wedge, and it could even be honed like a razor. I honed it all the way to 8K, and then shaved with it. And the shave was smooth. I've had worse shaves with razors. I can easily believe his claim about having had better shaves with an axe. Especially with the way he hones his straights :)
Shaving with an axe is an interesting parlor trick, but really not that special. The only things to keep in mind are the fact that because of the weight (5 to 10 pounds) it has significant momentum (so careful near the jugular veins) and the thing has a yard of hickory attached to it (so take care not to hit the mirror).
Big deal, I once shaved with a Bic!
(not really, I chickened out. axe is way cooler)
Would it be terrible to admit.... I kind of Enjoy bashing Mr. Carter? Hes kind of fun to put on the whipping post!:whipped:
