I feel sorry for those that will follow his advise on how to"sharpen" a razor.
I also did not see when hi used that Jnat, I admit I skipped trough the video though.
if it works for him I guess... damn sure I won't be tryin it
Did he actually do anything right?
Damn, I really would like to try it out though. Just put excessive force on the edge and rub it against the stone until sharp, how can you go wrong with that. :D
I've got to get one of those weathered boards to run the edge through after I sharpen on the 4/8k ..... that must be the 'secret'
Just out of curiosity, why shouldn't you hone with a trailing edge?
I don't think I'd like to try that. If I was just learning how to hone, and this was the first video I'd seen, I would be totally confused.
I also noticed that he 1) used quite a bit of pressure with his fingers on the toe of the blade, and 2) he consistently touched the toe of the blade to the stone before any other part of the razor.
There's many ways to skin a cat, but I think I'll leave this one for Murray Carter.
I haven't tried his method. OTOH, all instructions that came with hones made for over a hundred years, instructions given in barber manuals published for an equal amount of time, not to mention tutorials by razor honemiesters (if you'll pardon the expression) say to hone with the edge leading. So either he has discovered a technique that was heretofore unknown, or it is not an effective method of honing a razor and is inferior to the tried and true traditional method. I may give it a try just for the heck of it ..... without running the edge through the board or cutting off the end of my belt. :)
Well I suppose if you're confident in your ability to sharpen a blade, you figure your technique will work for anything made of metal.
Oh, and I am just learning how to hone...Actually I feel like I know everything now. Thank goodness you posted this. I thought I was gonna have to use the search icon again.:p
Not my idea of a good time but I have heard and read about weirder systems lol.
Honing will remove metal from the edge. If you hone edge leading, the junk will be scraped off and stay on the hone.
If you go edge trailing, the metal is abraded in a different direction. There is a chance that the junk will stay attached to the edge instead of falling off, and if it falls off, it might take a piece of edge with it.
For knives I don't know if it makes much of a difference, but for razor edges it may.
Wow who knew it was that easy. I am not too sure about slicing through a belt every time I hone though.I guess the Jnat was just too pretty to risk putting metal to it. Now I just need to follow these directions about 45-50 times to get all my razors nice and sharp. Who is going to add the 3 finger test to the Wiki? I suppose all the honemeisters will be going broke now that the secret is out.
Obviously a knife guy & not a razor guy. I hope none of our "guys" try this silly method, kind of like honing on a concrete cinder-block.
Today I learned the three finger test! :hmmm:
I also learned that the 75.00 strop I bought, can be replaced with a newspaper.
I can use my coffee table to remove any burrs on the blade; just have to find a section that the ole lady won't notice. :nj
On Behalf of Myself,Rob(pinklather), and most anyone else from Oregon, Please keep in mind that's not how the rest of us hone
Michael
I only made it 34 seconds in. When somebody talks about themselves in third person, I hit the X.
Is his razor now one of those famous Ebay shave ready razors?
Ive never honed a razor in my life and am looking to give my two a quick touch up sharpen in the next few days, from everything i have seen and read on here i was looking a little sideways at that video trying to work out how me managed to make such a hash of what seems to be a simple and delicate task.
I especially enjoyed the amount of force used to strop over the edge of his belt, the only other time i have seen that amount of force used was to try and arm wrestle a grizzlie bear to the floor ;)
I for one will be taking my honing advice from SRP alone :)
You know to stop when it passes the 3 finger test" Did anybody else notice the ambulance on its way at 2:24? Now you know why!
I am not saying that razor will not shave, i'm sure it will. I think i understand why he says his scissors shave better than a straight razor now though.
/Why did he spend so much time talking about the Japanese hone, but not use it?
Forgetting his "3 finger test" his method is not completely wrong. he quite clearly calls what he is doing after the 1000k stone "Stropping" This will in fact leave a trailing edge of metal, which will be broken off by drawing the blade through the soft wood. Is it the correct way to sharpen a razor? define "correct" Will it work? certainly. Would THIS guy ever do it to one of his own razors? (third person speak :hmmm:) Hells No!
And in all fairness, maybe when he said "we" he was referring to the entirety of the carter cutlery corp. because I am pretty certain Mr. Carter is not personally going to Japan and flying the waterstones back in his luggage.
This movie is very detrimental for the whole straight razor shaving community. If someone new to straights will try to sharpen a straight this way, than he will never achieve a shave ready razor. The majority of knife enthusiasts look at him as a sharpening professional, and they will think that he knows how to hone a razor, but looking at the video he obviously doesn't have a clue about it. Thats not a bad thing, but he shouldn't make a video of it, encouraging others to ruin razors this way. I never understood why people think that if they can sharpen a knife, than they can sharpen anything.
Now I understand why so many razors on ebay are 3/8 at the toe and 5/8 at the heel.
wow just went to his website....His toolishness is worse than I thought.

Well, what the...that guy stole my patented super expert sharpening system I invented and patented and was gonna start franchising out for a hefty profit. Where's my attorney?
30 posts and not one guy will stick up for Mr Carter? Sorry guys, but I don't see the big deal here.
First of all, this guy knows steel. Read his bio - I'm sure he's not misrepresenting himself solely to dupe the online world. Though I would agree that Mr Carter doesn't follow conventional high SRP standards the fact is that he states at the beginning that he is one of us: a straight razor shaver. I'm assuming that he is shaving with his own edges and not shipping his razors out to Lynn every month, so following that logic it would also be safe to assume that his edges are indeed shave ready and likely comfortable (for him). Who knows what that comfort level is, who cares?
I'm not saying that I would ever sharpen a razor this way, neither do I think a newb should take begginer honing lessons from this video. I'm also not convinced that was his intention, and perhaps he did this on purpose to laugh at the uproar it would stir up (?). But I'm not going to automatically jump on the bashing bandwagon because his methods are unorthodox and non-conformist. If it works for him for his daily shaving experience, then great!
Unfortunately, forums sometimes turn us into honing snobs, thumbing our collective noses at different approachs. Do a search on coticule or BBW and you'll see some "heated disagreements". Would anyone here be willing to contact Mr Carter to try one of his edges before finding him guilty?
Unfortunately Ryan, forums turn all of us into snobs; honing or otherwise. It's easy to sit in front of a keyboard and pontificate about the mysteries of life (and shaving). I have been banned from many Apple forums because I didn't share the Borg Collectives' belief that Steve Jobs s**t golden eggs every time a new Apple product was unveiled. :borg:
Personally, I thought Mr. Carter was pretty full of himself but hey, maybe it was just acid indigestion :D
It's completely contrary to what I've learned. But, who knows? Maybe it works because of the pressure he's using while backhoning. I do imagine though that method causes a lot of hone wear.
If I had a razor I didn't mind tearing up I'd give it a go for gits and shiggles. I've got the king stones he's using. I don't have a belt I'm willing to cut though. Nor a $350 neck knife to cut it with.
I also don't have that mystery jnat but I do have a PHIG... must be close enough. If I find something for under 5 bucks at the antique store next time i'll give it a whirl.
someone "could" send him a razor to hone and see what its like when it returns............
just because someone doesn't do something the exact same way as everyone else does not make it wrong......... it just makes it "different"....
i watched a couple of his videos....... the shaving with the neck knife and shaving with a spoon........
cuz has some skills handling a razor/spoon/knife around his face....
I still stick to my opinion, this video is simply destructive for anyone who wants to sharpen or shave with a straight razor. If it would be backwards, and for example I would be an expert in honing planes, and I would make a video of myself honing japanese high end kitchen cutlery on a 5" bench grinder, while hogging off 1mm of the steel, than that would be the same as what he did right now. Can it be done? Yes. Does it work for him? Yes. Will it work for others? I doubt it. A lot of guys can't even get the hang of it for a while if he follows our guides, what would be if they try to sharpen a razor like in the video?
In place of Mr. Carter, I would be ashamed of this video. This is not far away from the concrete block video, just in this case he is totally serious about it.
Carter may know how to make razors. But he equates stropping (with a newspaper or belt) to stropping with a real strop when honing and stropping are two different things. Had I learned about shaving from him, this is misinformation I would probably take as gospel.
With the videos you see on his honing technique, you have to wonder if over time you will either put unintentional smiles... or frowns in your blades.
A mechanic may know how to fix a car but he won't necessarily know the physics of why it works. I'm not saying Carter can't make or even sharpen blades. What I am saying is SRP is full of much better information for the true straight razor devotee.
