Jnat nagura on Guangxi?

I know I'm probably stepping into a dragon's nest here, but this came to me in the sleep last night and if I don't ask (or try it myself) I'll never get an answer....

I have no experience and very little knowledge when it comes to Jnats, but at the Oslo meetup this weekend I got the understanding that it is the Naguras that really do the main job?

This have obviously been boiling in the back of my head, and when I woke up this morning I had this thought in my head:


The Guanxi's are known to be hard, and when lapping the one I have I seriously suspected it to come from the Mount of doom and not some Chineese mine and raising a slurry on it with the original slurry stone takes forever.
So far it seems like I have been lucky and gotten a good stone, giving good results.

Could it be possible to use Jnat naguras on the Guangxi, and would there be any possible benefits?

And could it, with a good Guangxi improve the results?

You can borrow my Tenjyou Nagura and see how it works out I think it's a medium coarse nagura, similar to 8k or something, not too sure..

It will work fine. I've tried various things on the woodcraft guanxi stone, and the nice thing about it is that if you put something on the surface of it that you don't like (I don't like the way crox felt), then it doesn't get into the stone very far and laps off quickly.

If I were in your shoes, I would be inclined to either lap the stone fresh and leave the slurry on it, or get a small chinese hone and cut it to pieces to use as a nagura.

The guanxi/phig/whatever ...at least the good ones ... cut pretty quickly on slurry with good water management (i.e., a slurry that only has enough water to operate). It is the hardness, in my opinion, that makes them settle in and get slow if the surface isn't abraded. The same hardness makes them behave much finer than the actual particle size.

A little unwanted information, I know, but confirmation that the nagura will work fine on the stone and do nothing unpredictable.

Nagura/slurry work two ways,

Using a very hard stone and a softer nagura creates slurry from the nagura, in which the grit rating of the nagura determines the cutting power.

Using a harder nagura then the base stone brings up the slurry from the base stone which doesn't actually increase the grit rating but increases the amount of grit available to work with.. (this would include using diamond plates)


The problem or romance depending on your viewpoint is that all of the above are quite variable and therefore the results cannot be predicted or repeatable except by the person working the stones, we can hint at what we think, or tell you what our setups do, but your's will be unique

I think I will take up Amund's offer and borrow his Nagura, that along with the other nagura/slurry stones I have and got incoming should make room for some experimenting, I "need" to get out of my Naniwa SS box
