Mostly not.... If I am honing a couple razors
I hone the first on a given grit then rinse it
and place it down "flipped" for the next razor.
I do not lap to flat for each razor especially when
the razors have been shaving well (i.e. modest
honing and touch up needed).
I have an extra extra coarse DMT to lap my
hones flat and it leaves some "trenches". Since
this DMT is 120micron the "trenches" are at most
about half of that... I can watch them vanish
as I use the hone and when they are gone it
is about time to lap for flat again. Swarf does not
build up in the "trenches". Time and time this
reminds me that lapping flat each time is not needed.
Exceptions are my soft coarse Norton water stone hones.
This is very easy to see on a Norton 8K... I can touch up
a full seven day set and not have these telltale scratches
on the hone vanish. Other hones show this too....
I do take a very very well worn coarse DMT to the hone
after lapping it flat because the OCD part of me thinks I
should soften the surface. Slurry after a XXC DMT is not
good for honing razors I always rinse it off. If I want
slurry I use a medium credit card DMT or an old pocket
Arkansas stone.
