Thread: Naniwa SS 1k as a Bevel Setter, Or King?

Hello SRP,

So I'm venturing into the world of honing, and have acquired some "toys" to start out with:

-Norton 4k/8k
-DMT 120 for initial lapping
-DMT 325 for more frequent lapping
-A Chinese 12k for finish-honing,

and a Naniwa SS 1k for Bevel-Setting. Now my question is; is the Naniwa really not recommended for bevel-setting on its own? I was going to go with a King 1k, but I got a REALLY good deal on the SS. My plan down the road is to acquire the rest of the Naniwa SS set, so I'll be able to use the 1k with those. But is it reasonable to use it with the rest of my existing setup, or is the King 1k that much better for bevel-setting?

I can only vote for King 1000 as that's what I got. And it works well for me. i will say there's nothing wrong with mixing brands, the nani should work fine with what you got. After all I only use a king 1k/4k and a coticule /bbw combo from there up.

Edit: The 4000 grit can set bevels too, just a little slow. Wont hurt to take your time to decide.

Any 1k will do the job. After that it comes down to personal preference. My personal preference is for the King.

The Naniwa 1k is perfectly acceptable and works very well IMO. It is however slow...which is not a problem unless your 'in the business' or in a hurry. I also have a King 1200 Big Block that I use for just about everything. Both stones require frequent 'light lapping'. My usual routine is to set the bevel with the King (much faster cutter) and then 'smooth it out' with the Naniwa. That might seem contrary to some folks but it works very well for me...

From there your Norton 4/8 will take it the rest of the way for shave ready and then the Chinese 12K for final finish.
