    Default Can I get an edge with a 12000 grit stone?

    Hi all - Clearly a newbie question. First I bought an unhoned blade. Then I got a Naniwa 12000, thinking I could skip getting a more coarse stone and just use more strokes. It doesn't seem to be working. Am I doing something wrong or do I really need to go out and get a 4000? Thanks all

    12,000 is for finishing an edge and can help maintain it. If your razor does not have a proper bevel than you are basically just polishing over a poor edge. It is like thinking a wax will get out dents from a car. Sure your car will be shiny but the dents will still be there. So, having said you will want to get corse stones for bevel setting and cutting. I also suggest having a pro hone it. That way you can see how sharp that bugger can get.

    If you're trying to set a bevel then you are going to need a much courser stone than a 12k. That stone is a finisher or a good stone to refresh an already honed blade.

    I am new to honing myself, but I use 4 to 5 different grits to get a sharp edge. Another could tell you more but I think a 4000/8000 stone will need to be in your arsenal to get a good edge. Again Im not a professional, but it works for me. Good luck and there are great tutorials here to guide you too.

    If you have it honed by a pro then the 12k is ideal for maintenance.

    There is Phil from Classicedge.ca, he is Located in Oakville, On. He hones my razors and he gets an amazing edge.
