    Default Polish hone?....

Hey all, has anyone used one of these hones? Nenad translated it to be a quartz based hone.
I got mine really cheap, about $6.50 with shipping, he has several listings.

    Thoughts?

Very nice, do you know the average grit size?

It's coarser or finer than a Thuringen stone?

    It's harder or softer?

    Default Very interesting

Randy, please let us know what you think of the stone once you use it. Sounds like this may be one more arrow in the quiver!

-it isn't arkansas, he is coming from the family of limestones but he isn't limestone
-It's coarser and softer than a belgian blue (i have blue cocitule)

    Default Quartz based?

Randy, the description on that stone says it is compact limestone. Quartz would be much harder. You can easily test for the difference by dropping a drop of household vinegar on a corner of the stone. If it's limestone it will bubble, if quartz nothing will happen. If it's "compact limestone" I'm wondering how good it would be at honing as limestone is way softer than steel. Marble, which is metamorphosed limestone and therefore harder, isn't very useful as a honer.

    Howard,
I'm guessing it's much like your Belgians or my Thuringen/Hunsruck stones. A slate, limestone or other matrix containing an abrasive particle, quartz, garnet, etc......that does the work.

The Polish hone, much like the Escher, Thuringen, Hunsruck etc... are basically slates with something abrasive in them...........and often, little fossilized beasts too.

I don't recall what family the matrix of the Coticules is though.
