There should be a 2 digit year stamp somewhere on the inside of the handles. That is I believe the date of manufacture. I know on my wave it’s stamped 5/99, which squares with about when I got it.

I've carried a Leatherman for that long but have worn 3-4 of the slap out. I use mine several times a day every single day. I don't know how I ever got along without one.

The original?
I use a OKC Rat, however I'm thinking of getting the Rat II. The Rat I is a good knife, a simple design at a price that I don't mind having it get beat up, but I find it's just a little to large to be a practical EDC.
Seriouly, dudes. Spent a bit more, spent a few oil drops over the years and there is no need to buy anything after that. Back in 2014 this thing had almost a year in my pocket, check this same thread and do the math. Eight years poking holes through my trousers.
The only trouble I see with this practice is the holes in the pockets.
For my EDC to carry it 8 years without loosing it by misplacement or a hole in the pocket would be a big feat. Or I want to be able to abuse it.
That limits the price of my EDC to what I won't be mad about if I have to buy another.
My currant one is a Benchmade 707 that I found used for $25 USD if I remember right. I am liking the D2.
If it is a truly EDC, most certainly will find a way to erode a hole on any clothing piece.
I guess it could , but my EDC is a small buck stockman, been in my pocket for 20+ years, no holes. Less than 20 bucks, if it’s going to wear holes in my pants, I’ll just stop carrying one
The longest I have carried the same knife as an EDC is around 8 years. Given to me by my father for Christmas.
I remember the time with a WD45 the battery connection was loose so I used the knife jammed in to make a connection. It heated up and the knife tipped over from the tip of the blade. But the tractor started. I maybe should have known better but I was 14 or so. I reground the tip! I also have a scar on my thumb from that knife. many stories.
At 20 or so I lost it and I was mad.
A few years later while cleaning out the loose hay at the bottom of the barn it was found again.
It sits on a shelf and I would have a hard time carrying it as an EDC again.
The shortest time I have carried an EDC is one day or so.
I was spear fishing and cut the line to the decoy and set the knife on my lap.
A few minutes later I stood up and the knife went down the hole.
Must have been the Ice Goblins..........
Down it went into the weeds. I could have gotten a magnet etc. and at that time it probably took me 3 hours of labor to buy a similar one. So I wrote it off!
