New Knife for the Collection

When I was serving in the US Navy, the small arms on the submarines I was attached to included the M1911A1 .45 ACP pistol, .45 ACP Line Throwing Gun, M14 rifle and 12 gauge shotgun. I qualified on all the weapons but I really loved the pistol. I did very well with it too. I won a shooting competition for my ship against all the other ships in the sub group (I know, that and $5.00 will get you a cup of tea from Starbucks). But those who have fired a Navy .45 know what a great weapon it is. To comemmorate this legendary handgun, Foster Knives has designed a beautiful folding knife that resembles the1911. A "double action" folder is a knife that can be opened manually (in this case with the thumb stud which looks just like the magazine release on the pistol) but is also a switchblade with a cleverly hidden release mechanism. Just slide the beautifully checkered left hand cocobolo scale toward the back of the knife and the four inch blade fires out and lock up with great authority.

Anyone who loves that great old .45 pistol would be proud to have this very well made Foster knife. There are many configurations so if you don't want the double action, you can save some cash by getting the manual folder.

Safety Lock

The Patented Lake-Walker safety lock prevents accidental disengagement of the liner. Once the knife is open, simply push the safety button forward. This positions a locking plate into the recess where the liner spring rests when the knife is closed. This physically prevents the liner from unlocking the blade. I rarely ever get sucked into threads regarding knives.....I am kind of a recovering knife idiot savant. Yeah, I went through a phase many years ago of learning lots about em, and then buying some (of course). There were many makers whose works I admired, but I was only able to acquire a very few pieces. All were under $500, so no masterpieces............heh.

In the mid to late 90's, a large knife show would be held in Chicago every September. Hundreds of dealers, makers, and reps would be in one huge building.......tables brimming with wonderful toys. Man.......I'd buy a two day pass for that show, and enjoyed the hell out of walking around and handling things I'd only seen in magazines. Lots of autos, with many charming ways to activate em. Double actions were available also to play with and buy, and those tended to be a bit pricey. That annual show ended when 9-11 occurred.........security or something like that. Really a shame.

I found the double action knife to be quite a delight. Yeah, they're real sleepers, which is part of their appeal. Plus, that mechanism is a PITA to do correctly, from what I understand. Looks like yours seems to be kind of a scale release. Most of those types will work differently than yours, but it's a similar idea. Very nice. Actually, now that I think of it, yours may be more of a button release than a scale.

Hehe, I always figured the perfect knife for CARRYING would include a few little 'options'. Yeah, you don't wanna get popped for walking around with an automatic........that's a Federal deal(and a big one) in most states. However, a little tweaking and voila!!!!!!!! See what you think.

First, I'd use a Swiss Army knife as the basic design. Then, I'd add the double action release, either scale, bolster, or other methods of releasing the blade. Nice and inconspicuous so far eh?

Then..........have you ever seen those custom knives with the secret compartments built into em? Yep, it's about the same shape as something that would hold a cigarette, but it's hidden from view. I'd like that in my knife.........just for the heck of it.

There, that should do it.........just a couple minor adjustments is all that's needed and my dream knife for everyday use is ready. So innocent looking, and yet so amusing in it's own way.

The blade can be openend by a spring. You are not allowed to have those in the UK if the folks of britishblades.com are to be believed.
They also lock, which makes it a double whammy. Locking knives are not allowed either.
And the blade length is > 3", which makes it a three pointer. No can do either if I recall correctly :cry:

I asked their advice before I visited the UK a couple of months ago.
I had to resort to carrying a swiss 2" blade, non-locking penkife if I wanted to carry one.
My regular carry (locking spyderco delica) would have me thrown in jail as soon as I went through customs.

Here's another addition that is just an awesome new tool. It is the Columbie River Knife and Tool (CRKT) Kommer Fulcrum. I have said before that I only carry knives that can be opened and closed with one hand. It isn't very often someone comes up with a new way to open a pocket knife. It didn’t take us long to purchase the rights to this surprising new lock for use in CRKT production folders.
We felt the Fulcrum Action was perfect for a sleek design proposed by knifemaker Russ Kommer, and so we put Russ to work integrating it into his folder, which we call the Fulcrum™. We also worked closely with our manufacturing experts to develop a production lock with smooth action and tight, wiggle-free lockup.
So here it is, one of the slickest-operating lightweight personal folders we have ever seen, and that includes custom knives, too.
To open the Fulcrum, simply press the left side of the frame down with your thumb. The blade swings out to the 90-degree position. Then pull the left side of the frame back, gripping with your index finger at the choil, and the blade continues to rotate open and lock in the open position. After a few openings, you can do it naturally in one continuous, fluid action, or “fulcrumation.”
To close the Fulcrum, simply release the stainless steel locking liner. One-hand closing is also fast and easy.
The build uses our high-carbon steel InterFrame with a steel pivot at the back spacer. Scales are injection molded of tough CPL composite, and the swirls on each one are unique. The stainless steel bolsters have a diamond pattern.
The 2.75” blade is a modified drop point style with a high hollow grind, made from premium AUS 8 stainless steel.
We’re offering two models. For traditionalists, the base model 7403 features a satin blade finish, vibratory frame finish, and gray/black swirled scales. For the more adventurous, the deluxe model 7404 boasts a black titanium nitride blade finish, deep blue titanium nitride frame, and wild blue/black swirled scales.

I generally don't like modern styles in knives but that is one neat knife!

Do you use it much? How does the steel hold up for you?
I bought a Kershaw with AUS8 steel and found the edge does not hold up long. I tend to be hard on my knives, but all of my regular users hold up much better!

Naaa, I don't use it at all. I carry a Benchmade 940. This little CRKT Fulcrum is just so pretty I only pull it out to show it off. It's very small and I'm a big guy so it's too small for me as an EDC. I was considering getting one for 10 year old Elliott across the street for Xmas. I can say it came about as sharp as any razor I've ever bought.


I have alot of great knives I don't use for one reason or another, such as the first knife in this thread. Although the stealthy double action would let me fool a cop, she is so beautiful I don't want to F her up. Like you, I am hard on a knife I carry. Really sad huh. Locking isn't a combat feature, it is a safety feature to keep the blade open under pressure when in use, yet the idiots have assumed its a combat feature because all folders of the type they think looks evil do this. Never mind that all modern folders have some type of locking mechanism for safety (even the folding garden saw I own locks open).

Spring assisted knives are illegal in my home state too. Though once again for no good reason, that thumb stud works just as fast and sometimes more reliably than a spring action.

Welcome to the world of being robbed of your rights in the name of safety, and when you look at the logic of it it is easy to see how this type of thing doesn't contribute to your safety either.

Fun Fact:

In the UK it is illegal to carry a rock, if your intent is to use it in self-defense.

Yea Tim, you're right. The lock is purely a safety feature. The first lock blade knife I owned was a Boy Scouts of America Whittling Knife. I had the BSA logo and a liner type lock on one of the blades so it wouldn't accidentally close down on the little scout's fingers.

To your second point, although I love a good switchblade (and I own more than a few), the Axis Lock on my Benchmade EDC gives me such control over the blade I can open and close it faster, much faster than the Foster automatic I opened this thread with.

Definitely a safety feature. My second pocket knife was a 2" lockblade, as my first pocketknife left a red bloody line across the back of my fingers when I tried to cut a rope with it and slipped closing the blade on my hand.

And I believe the Benchmade you reference is legal here while the knife n your thread isn't. All about image over substance.

My everyday carry is a Spyderco P'Kal - an unusual knife with a special technique for its use.

There is a cd available on how to apply this knive.

It is not a utility knife but for certain needs in some situations it is without peer.

I really like the Emerson opening feature.

Ahhh, of course now I see. I'm not sure if I like that Emerson Opening Feature (EOF, pronounced yof:w). However, I do feel very strongly that these clip type folders should only be carried point up which is why the EOF works.

I just really like the idea of being able to open my knife one handed when my hands are greasy or impaired by mittens or gloves.

Emerson Opening is Spyderco's version of the wave feature. the spike coming out of the blade hooks on the edge of your pocket.

The reverse edge is the heart of the style designed for extreme close quarters combat.

It is highly effective.

This is a Schrade/Joe Kious collaberation! Two blades, reverse congress style, beautiful damascus, And just one beauty of a knife! See the twist pattern on the back spring and the spines of the two blades? when the blades are open there is no interuption in the twist pattern! Oh, and the blades have half stops, and do I ever love half stops!

Hey Mark, thanks for showing us that knife. You're right. I dig it muchly. It's a triple threat for me. I like Schrade knives. I like jigged bone handles. I like the worked spine and bolsters.

In the UK, a women was convicted for carrying in her purse a small dose of ground household pepper. She carried it with her to have something, anything to defend herself, in case she was assaulted. :(

Over here, the laws manage a good balance. Knives are allowed as long as they can't spring open automatically. :shrug:

But the concept of our laws have 2 definitions:
- weapons which are banned
- illegal weapons.

a banned weapon is any weapon that is on a list that is published in a specific decree. owning such a weapon is illegal, period. On this list are mostly the items that have become popular because of the movies. Spring knives, throwing stars and nunchucks are on this list.
But the concept of an illegal weapon depends on locality and intent. For example, my EDC spyderco is not banned. But if I tried smuggling it into a courthouse or assaulted someone with it, it would be classified as an illegal weapon and as such would land me in a world of trouble.

Even small swiss army knives are illegal if they lock.
The only thing I could carry in august was my 2" non-locking swiss army knife, which is basically something you'd give a 5 year old if he / she wants a pocket knife :(

I heard that spyderco is making a special delica without lock, just for the UK market.

And yes, locks are essential safety features.
When I was 5 I cut my finger nearly to the bone when my first penknife blade snapped shut in my hand and I pulled my finger from underneath the blade instead of opening the it first. :cry:

We had the pleasure of hosting a Belgian family here for a couple weeks last summer. The family dad and I spent alot of time talking about knives. He fell in love with a double action knife I had (similar to the Foster 1911 about which I originated this thread). He explained that it was particularly interesting because the laws in Belgium forbid the possetion of any automatic knife (switchblade)but the double action was so stealthy that he could show it to a cop who would never discover its secret. I gave it to him as a gift the day they left.

Yes if the cop wouldn't notice the spring action, he could get away with it. It'd still be illegal, so it would be a matter of luck.
