Thread: New Knife for the Collection

When I was serving in the US Navy, the small arms on the submarines I was attached to included the M1911A1 .45 ACP pistol, .45 ACP Line Throwing Gun, M14 rifle and 12 gauge shotgun. I qualified on all the weapons but I really loved the pistol. I did very well with it too. I won a shooting competition for my ship against all the other ships in the sub group (I know, that and $5.00 will get you a cup of tea from Starbucks). But those who have fired a Navy .45 know what a great weapon it is. To comemmorate this legendary handgun, Foster Knives has designed a beautiful folding knife that resembles the1911. If the grip shape is good enough for the most popular pistol in the world, it's certainly good enough for a carry knife. Inspired by the famous design of John M. Browning, the 1911 Folder is the perfect compliment to America's favorite sidearm and a superb knife in its own right.

The 154CM blade is heat and cryogenically treated for maximum durability and edge retention. The checkered thumbstuds on both sides of the blade allow for instant opening in an emergency or for convenience. This one-hand opening knife has a pocket clip for maximum versatility. The handle is made from machined aluminum. The handles are hard-coat anodized a matte black (Standard Model) or plated with electroless nickel (Custom Model). Both models have checkered rosewood grips adding classic appeal and a secure grip.

The one I got resembles the left hand photo but there is something very special about mine. It is a double-action folder.


A "double action" folder is a knife that can be opened manually (in this case with the thumb stud which looks just like the magazine release on the pistol) but is also a switchblade with a cleverly hidden release mechanism. Just slide the beautifully checkered left hand cocobolo scale toward the back of the knife and the four inch blade fires out and lock up with great authority.

Anyone who loves that great old .45 pistol would be proud to have this very well made Foster knife. There are many configurations so if you don't want the double action, you can save some cash by getting the manual folder.

Safety Lock

The Patented Lake-Walker safety lock prevents accidental disengagement of the liner. Once the knife is open, simply push the safety button forward. This positions a locking plate into the recess where the liner spring rests when the knife is closed. This physically prevents the liner from unlocking the blade. I do seem to recall that we can collct these but not USE them,which does make it a shame, becaause all good knives & razors should see at least some use.Paul

I rarely ever get sucked into threads regarding knives.....I am kind of a recovering knife idiot savant. Yeah, I went through a phase many years ago of learning lots about em, and then buying some (of course). There were many makers whose works I admired, but I was only able to acquire a very few pieces. All were under $500, so no masterpieces............heh.

In the mid to late 90's, a large knife show would be held in Chicago every September. Hundreds of dealers, makers, and reps would be in one huge building.......tables brimming with wonderful toys. Man.......I'd buy a two day pass for that show, and enjoyed the hell out of walking around and handling things I'd only seen in magazines. Lots of autos, with many charming ways to activate em. Double actions were available also to play with and buy, and those tended to be a bit pricey. That annual show ended when 9-11 occurred.........security or something like that. Really a shame.

I found the double action knife to be quite a delight. Yeah, they're real sleepers, which is part of their appeal. Plus, that mechanism is a PITA to do correctly, from what I understand. Looks like yours seems to be kind of a scale release. Most of those types will work differently than yours, but it's a similar idea. Very nice. Actually, now that I think of it, yours may be more of a button release than a scale.

Hehe, I always figured the perfect knife for CARRYING would include a few little 'options'. Yeah, you don't wanna get popped for walking around with an automatic........that's a Federal deal(and a big one) in most states. However, a little tweaking and voila!!!!!!!! See what you think.

First, I'd use a Swiss Army knife as the basic design. Then, I'd add the double action release, either scale, bolster, or other methods of releasing the blade. Nice and inconspicuous so far eh?

Then..........have you ever seen those custom knives with the secret compartments built into em? Yep, it's about the same shape as something that would hold a cigarette, but it's hidden from view. I'd like that in my knife.........just for the heck of it.

There, that should do it.........just a couple minor adjustments is all that's needed and my dream knife for everyday use is ready. So innocent looking, and yet so amusing in it's own way.

The blade can be openend by a spring. You are not allowed to have those in the UK if the folks of britishblades.com are to be believed.
They also lock, which makes it a double whammy. Locking knives are not allowed either.
And the blade length is > 3", which makes it a three pointer. No can do either if I recall correctly

I asked their advice before I visited the UK a couple of months ago.
I had to resort to carrying a swiss 2" blade, non-locking penkife if I wanted to carry one.
My regular carry (locking spyderco delica) would have me thrown in jail as soon as I went through customs.

Here's another addition that is just an awesome new tool. It is the Columbie River Knife and Tool (CRKT) Kommer Fulcrum. I have said before that I only carry knives that can be opened and closed with one hand. It isn't very often someone comes up with a new way to open a pocket knife. Usually when there is a new design it is gimmicky crap. This CRKT Fulcrum is all new and tres cool! Check out this little video:
