Default A thank you to SRP for your help.

Hello to all,my name is Erik and I'd like to say thank you to those here who've taken the time to set up,maintain and post on this forum. This place has been a wealth of knowledge and has guided me in getting into this passion of sorts. Let me give you a bit of background.
I have wanted a straight razor for shaving since I first started shaving but my parents thought I crazy. I really fell in love with the idea when I started putting edges on knives,my stepdad had a very nice and very costly set of hones and on those occasions I could get my hands on them I was able to put a shaving edge on my knives. Well enough to shave my face without discomfort. Well years passed,I married and had kids and the idea faded from memory till a few weeks ago when I was forced to shave with one of my wife's BIC razor shaped objects. Yeah it lit me up. So I got to thinking and then doing research on the matter which lead me here. I am too new to justify a Dovo or some such just yet so after a few failed bids I landed a decent condition Oxford for $20 incl shipping, from what I've read here the quality passes muster.

I've gone over straight razor specific honing as well because my experience with other blades has told me something as precise as a razor will require proper hones and technique and sure enough the members here came through with videos on youtube. I picked up a cheap Hen and Rooster razor and next on my list is the Norton combo hone,a bit finer than what I currently have. As you have guessed my plan to get the practice in on the H&R rather than chance botching a vintage blade. If I can put a shaving edge on the H&R then I figure I can with the Oxford as well.

I suppose that sums up my intro and again I'd like to say thank you to everyone here. Have a good one.

Hi Erik - Where are you located in Florida? There are quite a few members here from the Sunshine State and one of us may be able to give you some hands-on help. Welcome to the forum.

    Regards - Walt

Glad you are finding some good information here. I'll give you some bad info now...from what I hear, those Hen and Rooster razors are about like Gold Dollars: some take edges, some do not. Hope you have the later. Add your general area in Florida and I'm sure you can find a mentor, this would help you through the learning phases much easier & swiftly.

Welcome to the forum Eric. I'm curious as to what exactly forced you to use one of your wife's disposable razors though. I feel there might be a story there.

Nah, I don't need a copy, I hear it every other morning when I shave my own face.

Movie night man, movie night. I thought I had another Fusion in the cabinet or at least an older Mach 3 but I was wrong and I like to look presentable when out. I was hesitant enough to ask to go another night but the wife broke out her serious face. So I had to bear with it and use one of her BIC razors.
