My name is Ben, and I am a submariner in the U.S. Navy. I enjoy reading books, quiet evenings on the porch smoking one of my pipes, and sipping good burbon whiskey. If there's anything else you want to know, feel free to ask.

I've wanted, for a while, to try a straight razor shave. I recently decided to go for it. I wanted to start out with something inexpensive, in case I didn't like, so I ordered a "Shav-ette" just to try it out. I'm still waiting, quite impaitently, for it to arrive. If I enjoy it, I will eventually spring for something with a little more quality. I'm open to tips or suggestions, but probably won't really know what you are talking about until I get to actually try it out. I appreciate any input in advance.

G'day Ben, be sure you look at the sub forum on Shavette's. There is plenty of information in there on that type of shaver, and of course a lot more on your standard cut-throat razor. Welcome to the forum mate.

Welcome to SRP!
Sure Shavettes are simpler to maintain but slightly different to shave with . you are going to want to try a variety of blades in it until you find the one that fits your face.... most vendors have blade sampler packs.

Find a local barber who does straight shaving and see what he can tell you about shavettes, preferably one who is also knowledgable about SRs.

I hadn't realized that there was a shavette subforum, but since you posted that Mick, I've been reading up on some of the posts. Thank you for mentioning it.
I've been watching videos, reading posts and articles, etc. but mostly waiting for my razor to get here so I can get started.

Hello and.welcome, though I am late as usual. Are you planning on taking the razor to sea with you? How smooth does a sub travel?
Oh and do you have to take the chair off the porch when you submerge?

Ed, depends on where we are. Cruising deep at 4 knots to nowhere, near the equator would be smooth enough. Anywhere in the north Atlantic, would be like trying to shave on a canoe in a speed boat wake. Also, yes, we have a chair on the front porch of the sub, next to the screen door.
