I think most of us strop at least a few laps after the shave as well as before. It's important to get that edge clean and dry, so that it doesn't degrade via oxidation b/w shaves.

It really does take a while to get good shaves. Skin stretching is a factor, and blade angle of course…it'll come. If tabletop stropping eliminates one variable in your troubleshooting, that will help.
    Keep your pivot dry!

What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

I just posted THIS to another new Iowegian member.

Let me know if you'd like to get in on it (depending on your location and willingness to travel) and we can set up a mini meet-up.
