Hi guys,
I found this site after searching YouTube for videos on SR shaving. I've never given shaving with a SR any though until I found my grandfathers or great grandfathers razor while cleaning out my moms apartment a few weeks ago. Now it's constantly on my mind. My grandfather passed away in '83 when I was three and I didn't find the razor until after my mom passed, so I can only speculate that it was his. It's an imperial that I would like to clean up and use but I'm not sure it's worth it. The scales are cracked on one side and there's some rust on the blade. I've been learning a lot the past three weeks or so. I know I need to learn more before I take off and buy my first razor. Sorry for the long intro post.

Hello Cody and Welcome to SRP from another new guy, engine 46 is right on the $ with all the info, and you came to the right place to get shaving with the family Razor.

Hi and welcome. Steve has started you in the right direction. Read the library info and you will get the jist of most of it. The razor looks in pretty good condition and probably wouldn't take too much to restore. With the crack at the wedge that can be fixed to keep the original scales as well. Check out the classifieds and you will find someone who can help you no worries and you can start shaving like your grandfather. Nice find Cody. I would certainly restore that razor... You could even pass it on to your son/s someday.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm looking forward to getting started, but it will probably have to wait a bit longer. Between two girls (3yrs and 18 months) and 50 plus hour weeks at work I'm lucky to have time to knock down my whiskers with a beard trimmer once a week, but I'll keep learning in the mean time. One question I do have is about starting with a shavette. Should I start that way and go to a straight razor later or just start with the sr?

There are pros and cons to a shavette. Pros are you can start straight away with less maintenance and user possible stuff ups (nick strop or bad stropping etc). Cons are extra cost, more likely to nick yourself and can be harsher and the technique while similar is a little different so you will still need to adjust to a SR. Personally I would just jump right in you have to learn at some point so you may as well do it from the beginning. I know how you feel with no time. I started shaving once a week on the weekend. It is a good excuse for a little me time and fun to boot
