Hello...newbie here...
Hello everyone. I am new to the forum. Looking forward to learning more about straight razor shaving. I have been a DE wet shaver for a while now. Looking forward to getting into straights. I am starting with shavettes (have 2 on order waiting for them to arrive) ...mostly because of the initial cost outlay for a good straight and strop. I want to make sure this kind of shaving is for me before I invest. While I am waiting for my shavettes to arrive I am making good use of my time reading and watching youtube videos on shavette and straight razor shaving.

Welcome!
Lots of info available here. Spend time in the library and the beginners area. There are a lot of folks here with a vast amount of knowledge, so questions are responded to very quickly.
Some people say shavettes are harder to use than straights, so if you have trouble, shifting to a straight may be a good idea. You can pick up a shave ready used straight from the classifieds section here, and Straight Razor Designs has reasonably priced strops of good quality.

Welcome to SRP!
I started with a shavette and I like to think it helped me. I still use it every few weeks. The first shave was still a bit nerve racking. Just go slow and start with one cheek.

Welcome, I wish I could offer advice with a Shavette, but I have never used one myself. There's plenty of info here, just have to browse around. Good luck!

Hello Whiz and welcome to SRP.
As you already know there is a ton of info here and many members here to guide you in the right direction.
The shavette may be a good way to feel out the straight razor hobby however the shavette is a lot less forgiving and generally speaking offers a less comfortable shave,.... especially for the uninitiated.
The advantage or disadvantage (however one views the subject) is no stropping, no honing, just switch out the blade.:D
If you can manage a shave with a shavette you are definitely off to the races with a SR.
Good luck and keep us updated on your progress.

Hi & welcome to SRP. Everyone has had good comments to say. The library is the best place to start & go from there. Like others may have mentioned, ask questions & plenty of them. You will get many answers & sometimes many may differ but just use your better judgement & compare to anything you may see in the library. You might want to check this out:

You might want to look at what a straight razor is all about also:

You will be ok.
Good luck my friend.

a little but often is the word for SR shaving. I started by just shaving my right check for weeks now I can do the left with my left hand. Once you get to this point you will be surprised how much faster you become and better as well. I would look at vintage SR's on the classified adds on this site. Make sure to get one or more that are shave ready. I bought 3 and never looked back at doing so. I have never used a shavet but my barber uses them. He said they are a very un forgiven if not just done perfect. His biggest complaine is loading the blade in them. He told me it is very easy to cut your hand putting the blade in them at times.
Anyhow best of luck and I think you will do fine.....I am new to this myself only a month into it...already learned a lot of info and made a few onsite friends as well.

Welcome to the forum. Shavettes are cheaper to start using, but they can be pretty tricky to use. I started with one and cut myself to shreds. I looked like I'd been attacked by a pack of wild dogs! Using a straight after that was surprisingly easy. Far fewer cuts. You should be able to pick up a decent straight and strop without spending a fortune. Good luck.

Hi and welcome. From the reading I have done it is 50/50 whether it is easier to start with a shavette or straight. Some say they had no problems with a shavette and others that they couldn't get a decent shave till they switched to a straight so if the shavette doesn't pan out don't give up till you have used a straight. Whipped dog sells cheaper razors and strops that many have used to dip a toe cheaply. Good luck with your shaves and any questions feel free to ask.
