    Default Greetings From India

Just bought a whipped dog straight razor along with a strop and hone from Larry, a week or so till I get it. Been shaving for about 8 months using a mach3 and for the past 3 months using a shavette. I wake up in the morning, and go through my usual shave routine, lather using a boar and do 2 passes(WTG and ATG) and splash on some Old Spice and go on feeling awesome for the rest of my day. Anyway, Finally took the plunge and bought a real SE. I switched to wet shaving after I had to quit my part time job to focus on my Engineering degree and couldn't afford the mach3. Looking forward to meeting you guys and sharing your thought process.

    Wish me luck

    Welcome from SE Washington State!

I have a friend in India that I've helped with getting along with using straight razors. His name is Nausheer. He's now working outside India but we keep in touch.

I was amazed at how little straight razor gear was to be found in India, but I guess with AIDS etc all of the barbers just tossed the old style razors and since they didn't need to strop shavettes the strops were tossed also.

I sent Nausheer pictures and a pattern to have a strop made but he couldn't find anyone capable so I just bought him one and mailed it to him.

    Again, welcome.
Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

It seems barbers have used shavettes atleast for the last 40 years or as far as my grandfather can recall. Whilst there are plenty of leather workers in India, they know only what they are taught by their mentors- Usually a family member and with hardly anyone using a SE I can see how it has become a lost art.

    Thank you
