Hello everyone! I just received my first 2 straight razors passed down from my grandfather and I decided that now is the time dive into the world of straight razor shaving. I have been curious and read info quite awhile but I finally decided to take the plunge so any and all tips and info are welcome. I live in East Tennessee and have been using a double edge safety razor for awhile but am really looking forward to joining the "big leagues"!

And if anyone could point me in the direction of the best place to get my new blades cleaned up and honed, I would be very appreciative.

Personally, I would go with Gssixgun (Glen @ Welcome GemStar Customs - Gem Star Customs). Mainly because he taught me how to hone, lives nearby, and has decades of experience with straight razors. I'm not sure who might perform this work closer to your neck of the woods.

As for heirloom razors, you might want to preserve those for special occasions and find a good vintage razor in the Buy/Sell/Trade area of the forum. There's always deals to be found here on a weekly basis. I just saw someone post 2 blades for $65 shipped!

First, put away the heirloom razors.
The razor you learn on usually gets beat up by accidentally hitting the sink, faucet, countertop, floor, etc. You don't want that to happen to an heirloom.
So buy a shave ready razor from the classifieds on this site or a quality new one and learn to shave with it.
Once you learn to shave then you should use the heirlooms.

Start by reading the Beginner's Guide in the Library, it will answer a lot of your questions.

And add your location to your profile, hopefully someone is in your area that can help you out in person.

you have been given good advise where to send them,, and it really doesn't matter where your at the mailbox is just a short walk away. we also have several other guys who hone for a living including the owner of this site, I have used Glen for years and I,ll give my recommendation. I would have those heirlooms cleaned up and set aside till you learn how to shave and strop first just so that you don't mess them up, they are probably just everyday ordinary razors not worth much money but as an heirloom from family they are priceless Tc
