I’m new to straight razor shaving and made the move from a Shavette to a Dovo today.
My wife thinks I’m loosing it. When I’m not on utube watching shave videos I’m online scouring the net for brushes, shave cream, and any info I can find.
I’ve already spent enough to fund a vacation
IWhen the strop arrived last week she was concerned that it was something kinky.
Next comes the Lynn Abrams altar

After reviewing your previous posts ummm I wouldn't say that you are 'Out of Control' but you are way too excited for your and your lovely brides own good.

Slow Down!! There is One Absolute that is needed to not only learn but to use this age old art and all the money in the world can't buy it and that Absolute is PATIENCE!

Without it you will fail! Plain and Simple! I've seen it time and time again. So Please Slow Down. A simple Van Der Hagen kit will get you started down the road. It will include a brush, soap and a cup to mix lather in and you should find it for about $10. Learn on that and then you can start searching and trying other elements.

Take it slowly, baby steps if you wish to call it so but you will slowly succeed but with rushing and running you will more than likely fail and I don't want to see that happen.

He had to slap me down a few times before I finally got under control. Well Somewhat under control. LOL. I kept pushing it over and over. I hit a lot of snags along the way because I wouldn't slow down. I came out ok even though I was out of hand and spent lots of money but I can say that I wish I would have slowed down. I'm now at the point where I'm picky on the soaps I use. Only a few in stock now. I got more strops that I can use it a life time and enough razors for 50 peoples life times.

So take it slow. Learn how to lather well, Work on getting the pressure right during a shave and take your time! If you dont your going to hit the wall and full speed and not know what you hit. But after all that, enjoy what your learning and have fun doing it!

Hey Alschepis!

I can understand how you feel. My wife was actually worried after I'd spent about $500 on shaving supplies. It's a pity I dropped (and nicked) my piece while attempting to strop for the first time, patched my leather side here and there, stained the blade by not storing it in the open (it's very humid in Bangladesh).

I am not discouraging you, but just sharing my experience so you don't make the rookie mistakes I've made by being too rash. As cudarunner said patience is key. I still haven't perfected my technique yet, but I am loving every step on the way. Hoping to get my second piece once I am more comformatable. Hoo ah!

Do yourself a favor, when it comes time for a blade honing save yourself a lot of money and send it away for honing
