Haven't shaved once yet with my new Dovo. I have never used a straight razor actually. My first question is: Can I get my Dovo honed in Spokane, WA? It's brand new, showed up in the mail today. It's a 5/8 half hollow.

I am sure there is someone near you. Where did you buy it? If it came from straight razor design their razors come shave ready. Take your time, baby steps. Check the library. Ask questions.
Welcome, neighbor! I’d be happy to hone up your new Dovo for you. My stones barely get enough use as it is. ;)
Let’s see, I’ve got the Chosera 1k, SuperStones 3-5-8-10-12k, the SG20k and a blue-green Escher. That’s all I’ve got since Gssixgun saved (typed ‘shaved’ twice...lol) me early on from the pocket-picking evils of HAD. Well, to some degree at least. :)
PM me for contact information if you are interested. Cheers!
We are a great family. I told you there had to be someone near you.
Nice going speedster.
Welcome from Walla Walla!
I recommend that you take my friend Speedster up on his offer. He was taught by our good friend Glen (GSSIXGUN). Glen is also in your neck of the woods as he's in the boonies outside of Sandpoint ID.
This older but better way of shaving has a pretty steep learning curve but once semi-mastered it is truly a wonderful experience.

I just responded to his PM and clarified this honing would be totally free of charge — heck, honing is fun (well, ‘til it isn’t but that’s a wholly ugly tangent).
@cudarunner — I mentioned some similar points about straight razor shaving. It’s all about quality and enjoyment, not convenience...nor, saving on cartridges. :)
My hats off to you Mark. Good of you to step up and help make another new guy to the group enjoy his first shave. So many try to shave with the factory edge.
While I was in WA for the funeral I went to the high priced shave store in the mall to pick up some DE blades, was looking at the Dovo's in the display, and the guy told me all it would need was stropping before a shave. I told him to quit telling people that, and that ok would never shave with a factory edge. He wasn't happy with me.
All that aside, glad to have you in the group terriblegolfer. Glad you decided to check-in and ask a great question for your first question. Read the library. It takes time to learn to SR shave so when you give yourself that bad shave or draw blood a tiny bit, don't give up. It's worth the effort! And how many of your friends can say they shave with a straight? It's pretty manly IMO. :beer1:
Hello Golf Nut,
Welcome to SRP from another Pacific Northwest golfer. Hopefully, you can watch Speedster hone your razor, and I'm sure he'll give you some excellent advice about shaving technique.
Welcome to the forum.
Hello and welcome to SRP.
Unlike golf, if you have patience and practice at it, you will become very good at straight razor shaving.
Enjoy your time here on the forum and have fun.
Pete <:-}
Welcome TG
Speedster, will be handing you one smooth shaver.
Glad to have you with us, we'll help in any way. Just holler
In the appropriate thread.
A tip for you...Shave the lather, not your face. That's all the pressure you need. Its about hair reduction, not hair removal. That's the reason behind the multiple passes.
Above all, relax and have fun....and don't turn your head to look, while the blade is at work. :tu
Welcome to the forum. That is a great offer you got. I wish I had gotten my my first straight honed by someone here. It would have saved me a lot of time and frustration. A sharp razor is not necessarily a shave ready razor. The more you learn here (and apply!!) the easier it will come to you. It seems like the times I've shaved regularly for several days with a straight is when I've learned the most vs just using one every once in a while.
I sent @terriblegolfer the link to Glen’s YT video he made in 2012 (back in my had-hair days).

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Thanks especially to Speedster who I was able to meet and talk with. I'm looking forward to having a truly sharp straight razor to learn with. I can't believe I'm getting this done for free, pretty awesome! Time to start learning to shave and strop, to be continued...
Welcome to the Dark Side Neighbor :)
I am thinking it might be time for anothr Spokane SR meet Hmmmmmmm
Hello and welcome to the Forum. We are at your service.
You're most welcome, Alex! When I started into wet shaving 6 years ago, it was through the generosity of those I met on this forum that made straight shaving all the more enjoyable.
As your blade is Swedish steel, I will stick with synthetics, finishing on the Gokumyo 20k. Sharp and smooth is the goal!
ESP FTW! I recommended Alex attend a local meet-up so he could meet our Northwoods razor fiend..er, friend. ;)
Thanks gssixgun, I enjoyed the video of you and Speedster from 2012. It's really helpful to be able to see and listen to instruction. It's the next best thing to actually being there. I appreciate the time and effort it takes to make and post videos like that, thanks.
I would really like to meet up some time, any day would be fine. Unfortunately with my job schedule I'm gone for a week at a time but the plus side is I'm off for the next week. If I'm lucky enough to be off the week you guys end up scheduling, I'd be happy to join.---Alex
Welcome to the forum. :)
Sushi?
Glad i cant make it. Yuck!
There's much more than just Sushi Jerry! I too don't prefer that genre of food but they do have quite a large menu. I'm sure that you would find something that you would enjoy.
When my son and I attended that was the most expensive lunch I ever paid for! I had told him he could order 'Anything' he wanted and he ordered what I believe is supposed to feed 4 people. It came in a boat! If memory serves it was full of deep fried treats and they were all very good.
However between what he could eat at the meet and what he ate coming home there really wasn't much left for the next day. (A growing 18 year old) :gaah:
Hi and welcome aboard. Sounds like your sorted and I'm in the wrong WA
Welcome to SRP!!!!
Looks like you're pretty well on your way.
Check out the LIBRARY a lot of great stuff in there.
Most of all, enjoy and have fun!!!
Man, my first mistake was thinking this Dovo "Best Quality" (slightly overstated) would be a simply honing task. Unfortunately, the heel width was a bit less than the rest of the blade. Standard x-strokes were not affecting the heel properly. :banghead: Time to bust out the rolling x-stroke! So much for a 30-minute hone (try dubl). I was pleased to see that rough factory edge long gone by the time I finished on the SG20k.
After meeting Alex and handing him his blade and a sample of XPEC (thanks, @tcrideshd!), we quickly covered a few topics, especially the YMMV principle. E.g., gripping the razor, how often blades require honing, etc. Picture Bluto from Popeye (or, Fred Flintstone) to get an idea of this guy's beard density (2 shaves per disposable he told me). He may need honing more than your average shaver is my guess.
I am excited to hear how his first shave goes. He has been killing disposable razors for far too long. ;)
Exactly my thought! Will save him the trouble of using foam earplugs to drown out the singing hollow blade. ;)Quote:

1/4 or full wedge....couldn't agree more.
I haven't come across a new Dovo, that doesn't have issue's. All seem to be stabilizer problems, so I wasn't surprised to read your post. Once past that, they hone up real nice.!
This has been a funny intro thread for sure. Glad you got your blade successfully honed. It illustrates one of the hurdles of honing though. Even a pretty new razor isn't necessarily a straight forward honing job.
