Hi I’m martyin
My mother has recently given me my grandfathers razor, I’m impressed with the design of these, it’s got me hooked if ya like and now I want to know a lot more and hopefully own some really nice ones, still reading posts to get some answers to questions I have. Great to be on here.

You are fortunate to inherit a family heirloom to start your straight shaving journey. Now all you need is a strop and a shaving brush.
I suggest you start reading in the Library. You can access that from the very top menu bar.
SRP has a lot of very helpful folks who will answer your questions and point in you in good directions with sage advice. You have several long time members in the UK who I’m sure would welcome the opportunity to help out a newbie.
Welcome. There is nothing like an heirloom razor. However you should get another to learn with and make mistakes with. I have my great grandfathers razors and break it out for special occasions and when I’m feel nostalgic.

Indeed, save the heirlooms until you learn some things.
Some of us have destroyed our fair share of razors due to ignorance. Let's not do that with the heirlooms! ;)

It seems overwhelming at first - there's no question. But at the end of the day, it really isn't that much to figure. Grit is needed to stick with it, and stay on track. It's easy to fall off and then back on the wagon. I had to resolve to shave with a straight for a year with no exception to get it sorted. Now I can jump from mode to mode with no worries.Quote:

Hello and welcome to the Forum. It would be a good idea to put that old razor away for now. Learning this shaving technic takes some time. Shaving with a straight razor is only part of it. Hopefully there is a mentor near you that can help guide you through the process. in the mean time we are here to help you as much as we can. Ask all
the question you like and visit our library, it has answers to a lot of questions and the videos are most informative. Take it slow no one here is in a hurry.

The old rasor is safe at least for the time being��, as youve guesed my knowledge is (at present) somewhat limited, reading through the various topics i can see the passion involved.i like to think
Im ok with my hands so the restoration process interests me and the history too.
Id also like to own maybe a couple of really decent quality ones, again researching the topics here im sure would help in deciding.
Regarding a mentor........not quite sure what that would involve, shaving isnt discussed at work,but maybe ill bring the topic into the conversation when im out with reletives and see where that goes.
