Hi Everyone
My name is Paul and I live in Derbyshire UK. I am new to this site and was wondering if anyone can help. But before I ask for help I just wanted to say Hello. My dad was an old school Barber and I found one of his old razors in a drawer and had it restored. Thats how I got the bug. I'm not very practical and have just come across this old thing. Does anyone have any suggestions if I could get it restored. It looks like it has seen some hard times, like me ! Any advise or help very much appreciated.Attachment 333000Attachment 333001Attachment 333002

First off welcome.
Yes get it restored. It is in great condition. Scales look solid and no rust on blade. A little light polishing with Mothers or another metal polish. Chips on blade are easily removed during honing process.

Hi Paul, welcome to SRP!
Yes your razor can be restored, how much work needed is down to you. If you want to do the work yourself check out the library https://shavelibrary.com/ or this thread has many great tips.

If you wanted to send it out PM @Job15 or @Celticcrusader do excellent work and will put a fantastic edge on it.
Post a pic of your restored heirloom razor, we love pics :)

We have a few guys here that do restoration work. Most of us do it, but a handful are pros.
The scales have a little delamination going on and that one peen looks funky but the scales are in good enough shape to restore. The blade can be brought back too but you're going to lose a bit of width after the chips are removed and the razor is honed. When you remove a lot of steel from the edge some razors won't hold an edge any longer and it can throw the geometry off a bit. The guys here that do this type of work as pros will know all about that and will inform you. It's worth having it checked out. Being a razor passed down from your family I'd pass on trying to learn to do it yourself. Wouldn't want to damage it. But you could pick up another one or 200 and learn the fun of restoration. Ha.
BTW, Welcome to SRP. You can find all the info to do restorations yourself in the files around here. We chat about more than just razors so have a good look around. Post pictures often. Be sure to check out our Library too. Tons of great info in there. Stick around and ask questions. We are willing to help in any way to get you on track.
Looks like Mark beat me to it. But I will agree with the two names he came up with. Good guys that do good work in your part of the woods.

Hello Paul and welcome to SRP.
Hope you enjoy your time on the forum.
Yes indeed, do get it restored.
It's a fine razor, and being that it was your dad's makes it a priceless family heirloom.
I would give anything to have one of my dad's old straight razors.
Good luck!

Hi Paul I think it is Cockhill..I have a few.. Possibly some one has had a go at it before knocking the shoulder off maybe a bit of a re-grind.
Clearer picture would help.
Cheers

Welcome to SRP.
You have a fine old razor there that can quickly be brought back into service. You have already been given some excellent restorers to contact in the UK. I think you will be amazed by what they can do with that razor.
-
Welcome to the forum. I suspect your razor is a British military issue looking at the markings on the scales. I could be wrong though.

Hi everyone and a massive thankyou for your guidance and responses. I am very taken aback at how welcoming you all are. Great advice and I am going to pay someone to restore it. I may have mislead you in my original post. The razor I posted was a very recent acquisition, £5 from a flea market in Chesterfield. The original Razor that was my Dads was a Gotta. I have attached a before and after for those who are interested. The restoration was done by Huw Pierce Pritchard in Wales but sadly he is no longer working Razors. Again big thanks for your interest and welcome.Attachment 333030 If you look at the close up you can faintly see where he scratchedAttachment 333031Attachment 333032[/ATTACH]Attachment 333033 his name into the scales. Means a lot to me ! Sad Hey !!

Hi and welcome aboard. The Gotta came up well. Blade replaced?
-
It's the little things like names scratched into scales that can mean the most. The blade does look like it has been replaced.
-
Hi guys yeah you are correct the blade did need to be replaced I had to go out and buy another gotta razor to replace the blade so I then had to get a blade to go with the scales so I ended up chasing it round and now about 5 Gotta razors. !
-
Funny how that happens.

I haven't been on the forum much for the last few weeks. So I'm a little late with this. But welcome to SRP!
