Default Hello all, Thanks for having me

    Hello everyone,

I'm Dave. Here's the quick version of what brought me here. I was at a focus group dealing with men's grooming, and while waiting I read an article raving about the extremely close shave you get from a straight, and the rush you feel when you complete a shave without killing yourself.

I did a bit of research and figured it would be worth a try. As an added bonus, If I could learn to shave with a straight razor I might be able to give up the Crystal Meth Like dependancy I have with Gillette.

    Hello Freyguy. Welcome to SRP!
Well, it looks like your just be trading one addiction for another, but i think you'll find straight shaving a better high.

Have you purchased a straight razor and a shaving kit or are you still in the deciding stages?

Be sure to read the extensive Wiki database we have here and feel free to ask any questions ya like.

I don't doubt, I've already spent a lot of time checking out blades and brushes and all that fun stuff.

I bought a straight razor which uses replaceable blades. I just finished a thread about it.
I wanted to buy something inexpensive to start with, and if I enjoyed it, make more of an investment.

I've gotten about three shaves in so far, and they've gotten progressively better. Are these types of straights good for beginners? Does it take some practice to get a good shave (close with few or no cuts)?

The nice thing about the shavettes (the type of razor you are using now) is that they are a good introduction to the concept at an affordable price point. Yes, it will still take some time to learn the technique, and you will cut yourself a bit. Have no fear, we were all there at one point.

You will find that when you move to a full fledged straight razor, that it is still a bit different then a shavette.

A few things to be mentioned. Firstly, do check the wiki, as you find a great deal of information there. When you do go to purchase your first truly traditional straight razor, make sure to purchase it from a reputable online dealer. New razors actually do not come shave ready, so a proper edge must be placed on them. Check the classifieds here as many member sell vintage razors there at decent prices and they usually come shave ready. Also straightrazordesign.com is a worth while look as well. All their razors come shave ready, and they have everything else you will need as well.

    Lastly, welcome to SRP!

    Default Hello All . . .

    Hello, Freyguy:

Welcome to the land of the gentlemen shavers. There is a lot to learn here and the process is half the fun. Look around and you will find plenty of information.

The way I look at it is this: whether you start with Shavette, Feather or any other razor with replaceable blades, or a regular straight razor, what is important is that you start.

Obviously you already have. Good for you. Once you feel fully comfortable, the other razors you have used in the past will be become memories. Enjoy the shave. Have patience. Practice. And let your style and technique develop naturally.

    Regards,

    Obie

Thank you for the warm welcome. I enjoy the process and the learning curve, so I'm excited to be entering the world of straight razor shaving.

I also just wanted to say how great this website is. I've already gained a lot of information and spoken with some very passionate straight razor shavers.

    Hi & welcome Dave.
I wouldn't say straight shaving has any dependencies attached to it at all... Just various acquisition disorders
