Hello all. I have been in the military for 14yrs, so I know the pain of shaving every day. I am tired of constant razor burn and I have high hopes that str8 razor shaving is for me. I am looking forward to enjoying my morning shave. I greatly appreciate all of the helpful advice that this site has to offer. I am still trying to pick the best razor for me to begin with. There are a lot of choices but I am taking the advice to not just rush into the cheapest solution. I am leaning toward a Dovo.
See you in the forums.

Thanked: 1903Welcome to SRP, MrE,
Picking the first razor can seem like a daunting challenge, but it need not necessarily be one. I would go for a reasonably priced (read: "Best Quality" line) Dovo from a well renowned vendor, and keep it for comparison purposes for the first time. As a daily shaver, I would go for a reasonably vintage from the classifieds, keeping in mind that both can usually be re-sold with minimal financial losses unless you break them.
There are some round-robin recommendations in Frequently Asked Questions - Straight Razor Place Wiki and Shopping list for beginners - Straight Razor Place Wiki. Both should help you narrow down your choices to a few hundred razors...
Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.
Regards,
Robin

Welcome to SRP Mr. E.
Best razor to start with would be 5/8-6/8 in size but you'll likely read that in the Wiki.

Hi MrE and welcome,
Dovos are my favorite razor, hands down. Just get a sharpened 5/8 at whatever price point you want and "start at it". I prefer shaving in the evening and a straight is close enough to pull this off. They require patience that most military guys don't have, particularly in the morning. "The Mountain calls" as they might say in Colorado, at least where you're at.

Welcome to SRP MrE, we're glad to have you with us!
My first razor was a DOVO Black Star and it is still one of my favourite shavers and holds its own against my other more expensive razors.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Hello, MrE:
Welcome to SRP. You have made a sound decision to look toward the straight razor. You will not regret it.
As one who was in the Army during Vietnam (two-year draftee), I am familiar with the pains of daily shaving. The worse part was using the plastic disposable razors.
Obviously, the straight razor shave will take you a little longer that your current pattern with multi-blade cartridge reazors. I don't know your morning schedule and how tight your time limit for a shower and a shave. I am sure you will devise a sound method and allow for the additional time. Eventually, as you refine your straight razor skill, your shaving time will be reduced.
If I were starting out with a straight razor, I would opt for the Dovo 5/8" and 6/8" razor, as some have suggested. A pre-sharpened Dovo Tortoise Shell ("The Dovo Special") or the Dovo "Perlex" are good choices from any one of the vendors at SRP. These are quality razors at reasonable prices.
Good luck to you. If you have questions, please post them. This site is packed with experts whose knowledge boggles the mind. These guys really know their stuff and are generous with it.
Regards,
Obie

+1 on JimmyHad, Welcome to SRP and thank you for your service. Dovo's are a good choice in razor as are many others. The suggestion above on a vintage is also a good one. Either way the resale would be close to paid price if you went that way. Be sure to check the 'Razors to avoid'.
You may also like to consider shaving in the evening as opposed to your normal morning shave, at least while you are learning the techniques. While you are deciding on your first straight razor you can start using a brush and shave soaps/creams. This way by the time your razor arrives, in shave ready condition ( be sure to ask for that option or that it is stated in the ad) you will ahve the lather making down. It will also improve your current method of shaving if it's not an electric razor.
Hope you enjoy your visits to SRP. Ask questions as they come up.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

Thanked: 0First shave
Ok, I received my razor yesterday and put it to the test today. Cheeks,...not a problem. I took care of them like an old pro W/XTG. However, the chin and throat posed some problems for me. I was a little conservative with my throat since I still have razor burn from my regular razor, so I just went WTG. I hope the chin gets easier with practice. It was very awkward, but once again it had a little razor burn too so I didn't want to aggravate that more than it already is.
Does anyone have some good advice for razor burn?
