    Default Hey Everybody!

been trolling a few days and decided to officially join up and get serious about this 'straight razor' thing.

i've always thought they were cool looking and badazz, but all the ones i saw were extremely expensive. so i never picked one up. but after watching the sweeny todd movie and (bout the same time) discovering an old dublduck wooden mug and brush that belonged to my great grandfather (who used to be a barber(R.I.P)) i decided i needed to learn the art for myself.
seeing as we're on the edge of summer, it's time for the winter beard to go and time to pick up some shaving supplies, so i shall be roaming around looking for deals on razors and various knowledge to help me along. i've read the stickies in the beginner section so i'm finding my footing. lots of great info so far.

so any suggestions on razors, brushes, mugs, creams, soaps, strops?
i've read about true shave ready and not just factory.
i'm trying to do this on a budget and add onto it over time

and i cant use the aforementioned dubduck because it's covered in rust and has huge knicks in it.

at any rate, thanks for reading!

    Welcome to SRP.

You should find this Shopping list for beginners - Straight Razor Place Wiki useful. It contains a link to Buying a beginner's set on a budget - Straight Razor Place Wiki which you might also find helpful. Everything you need to know about shave readiness is explained in the FAQ.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

    Regards,
    Robin

Don't take any examples from movies, Sweeney had the bad habit of nicking his customers. =D

    Welcome to SRP...

Follow the advice, as well as the links provided in the previous posts, especially robin's. They will provide you with the essential information needed to make an informed buying decision.

If you're on a tight budget, check out the SRP "Classifieds" for a vintage str8 razor that is either in good, great or excellent condition. And make sure that it is described as professionally honed or shave ready in the ad.

Last, but not least, don't be fooled by seemingly attractive deals on ebay--especially Zeepk razors or combination razor & strop sets.

Take care. Hope that your foray into the world of str8 razor shaving will be as enjoyable as it has been for the rest of us here at SRP.

    my bad, definately meant lurking.

and i don't think i'll study the technique from any movie. ive saw a few videos on correct practices and i think Mr Depp didn't quite study up on the subject.....

i dont think they make a styptic pencil big enough for one of those nicks either.....
