    Default Hello from the UK

    Greetings,

Back in January I made the switch from cartridge razors to DE shaving and since then I have become more interested in learning how to use a straight.

(Apparently) I can't really justify buying a good quality straight, strop, and hone having so recently invested in several DE razors, brushes, soaps, creams etc. etc. but I might just add a shavette to the den for the odd weekend shave.

Welcome to SRP. A shavette is a way to familiarize yourself iwth the technique you'll be using with a regular straight. Once you do get a 'normal' straight razor I think you'll find that you like it better than any alternative. Once I got passed the learning curve that is the way it worked out for me. See my sig line below to avoid nicks and cuts and the link for more info.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Hello & welcome along!
I've got a starter razor you can have, if you want it? It's nothing special, but it's a tidy 5/8 with a round point. Should be perfect for you. I've also got a leather offcut you might be able to fashion a strop with.
The initial set up costs can be a little high when you're not sure it's for you, but this would allow you to try it on the cheap!
PM me if i can help.
