Hey everyone,

My name's Brock and I'm from Collingwood, Ontario Canada. I haven't purchased a straight razor yet. I've toyed with the idea of buying a razor for a long time but until today I thought they were too expensive for me to justify. However, while doing a little research today, I read somewhere that you can get cheap ones on ebay. So, for my very first question.....are there any razors to stay away from? Second question is which "inexpensive" razors would people recommend?

If you check in the Wiki, in the beginner's section there is a list of razors to avoid. In general, when you don't know what you are doing, it is better to avoid eBay altogether. You are much better off buying a razor from a member here in the Classifieds. That way you can pick a razor that is shave ready, which is a critical factor that you cannot rely upon when using eBay.

You'll save yourself money in the long run by not buying those expensive disposable cartridges. As Homer Simpson said..."I'm no longer a slave to the Gillette corporation!"

Avoid ebay, as you really don't know what you want, and you can't be sure a razor is shave ready even if someone says it is.

The classified section here has a number of inexpensive razors right now, and if they say shave ready here, they are.

Also, I'd like to recommend whipped dog. He specilizes in inexpensive kits for beginners who dont' want to spend a lot of money to find out if they like straight shaving. He has a very neat deal where you can trade a previously bought razor for a different one for the price of a regular sharpening. This lets one try a variety of style of razors to see what they like.

As everyone suggests, please stay off eBay until you have gained some information about the straight razor world. For now, the Classified here have a selection of good razors by our members. Also, many of the vendors mentioned here offer relatively inexpensive but quality razors. Yes, check the Wiki, too, for a wealth of information on straight razors. Beyond that ask questions.

I thank everybody for the fast replys and great info. I think I may follow member markevens suggestion and buy a razor from the whipped dog website. I'll let you all know how that works out when I get to it.

The prices may not be up your alley (not sure what your budget is), but you should check out Fendrihan, Classic Wet Shaving Store as they are right in your neck of the woods in Ontario. I live in Alberta and it was the closest thing I could find to a "local" resource around here that has a great selection. Of course, there are lots of great sites to choose from, but the only one I have experience with and thus the only one I recommend is Fendrihan. They have a few straight razor sets that come with the essentials and range from 245-327 and are made by a reputable company (Thiers Issard). Just an idea! Welcome to the forums, I'm new here as well and it's good to see fellow canucks on here.

The only thing I can add, other than agreement w/ what's been said so far, is that several members and vendors have websites w/ used blades that are very serious on the value scale. If you hunt around, you'll see them The Vendor section has guys that primarily restore, hone, re-scale, etc. They also have blades for sale & they are often just wonderful for the money.
