Question New Guy : Hello from the UK

    Hi everyone,
just figured i would stop by and say my hellos, as i am looking for some advice.

Im looking to switch away from safety razors and move to a straight edge, but my impressions to begin with was i would need a razor and strop. but after reading some posts on here there's talk of Honing and polishing and a lot of things that boggle my brain.

im not one for patience and almost run off to ebay tonight to buy a SE razor until i came to my senses, i dont have a huge budget (£50 - £60) at a push for now as i have not long moved into a new house and money is tight.

can anyone suggest a nice simple razor for this sort of money in the UK? (no offense meant but ive never been happy ordering from overseas)

i was thinking about getting a SE that has replaceable blades, like the ones that you can get off ebay to give me a start and get some shaving practice with but ive not really seen anything said about how good these are.

i also found this on ebay,

MGO Straight Razor with wooden handle Wet shaving 06 on eBay (end time 04-Feb-11 10:46:32 GMT)

i know its not that expensive and i should not expect a lot but wondered if its worth getting as a "practice" razor, using it to get some shave skill with and when money allows for hones, strops etc to use for sharpening practice.

any comments or suggestions would be really appreciated as im really lost with all this and dont want to make too many mistakes.

    thanks everyone

    Kris

    Krisdavie,

Welcome and hello from darkest Hastings

I have no knowledge of the MGO razor, but would hesitate to speculate on what you would get for 9.99 GBP.

For the budget you have, you can get a brand new Dovo Best, or the InvisibleEdge house razor from Mr Steve Dempster http://www.theinvisibleedge.co.uk
These are excellent razors, and will come shave ready.

You could also have a chat with Mr Neil Miller (www.strop-shop.co.uk) to see if he has a vintage razor in that price range, also supplied shave ready.

Mr Miller also makes superb strops.

Mr Miller and Mr Dempster are most excellent chappies to deal with, and can furnish you with excellent advice

If you haven't got a brush, an economical choice would be something like the Omega 49 Professional Boar at 8.95 GBP from Welcome To Connaught Shaving. ConnaughtShaving is an excellent resource for shaving comsumables.

    Good luck !

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

    Hi Phatman,
thanks for the reply, i figured since i dont really have anything i need at the moment for a SE razor i will get the Invisible Edge Gift set will have to save up a little longer but at least it will be worth the wait.

i like the Dovo razors as well and my birthday is due in may so if i get on with the IE razor i might put a request in for a dovo in may hehe

    thanks again for the reply.

Hello Kris, welcome to SRP. +1 to what Russ has said,I have recently purchased a Best Quality Dovo from Steve Dempster at the invisible edge and his service is excellent. I have had no dealings with Neil Miller personally, although numerous threads here will show he has many satisfied customers and a fantastic reputation.
Good luck with your search, I would avoid the ebay route for starters as both of the vendors mentioned offer restored vintage razors, a little less expensive than the new. Ryan

    Welcome to this forum.
what Russ said is true, let alone the MGO and go for a real str8.
I believe you throw your money away when you buy an MGO.
Consider your budget is invisible edge is the place to buy.
    Good luck
