Hello y'all from Cajun Country
At 60 yoa I decided to grow a Van Dyke and pulled out my daddy's old Bismarck. It wasn't long before I realized it needed "sharpening" and the research began, leading me to this site and the wealth of expertise that abounds here. Now I'm absorbing all the info while I await my Dovo tortoise, leather strop, brush, soap, et al.
P.S. I have a collection of rare Sheaffer fountain pens and am willing to trade pens for interesting straight razors. (preferably Bismarcks, Dovos).

Welcome aboard, Rick! Sounds like you're getting yourself properly equipped. While you're waiting for the goodies to arrive, peruse the beginners guides to help flatten out that learning curve.
As a side note, I spent two months this past summer in your corner of the world. I'm in the Coast Guard Reserve and got called to active duty in regards to the BP fiasco. I was based out of NOLA (the Homewood Suites, not bad), but made field trips to Baton Rouge, Houma, Grand Isle, Venice. I never believed the end of the earth existed......then I visited Grand Isle.
Welcome to your new obsession!

Thanked: 1936Ronnie is a great guy, you should take him up on learning the "art of straight shaving"...gotcha, thought I was gonna say something else huh? If you are really interested in the greatest shaves in your life, you should look up someone to see if they would be a mentor. The learning curve could be cut much shorter....note the pun...
