Hello, I'm a nooby to the whole SR and safety razor scene. After having my interest peaked on another forum I decided to find my pawpaw's razors. With luck, one of my uncles let me have two of his three straight razors (which need refurbished) and his gillette adjustable safety razor. Along with these things came his mug, brush, and some of the soap cake. The smell of the soap cake sure brought back some great memories. Any way, I want to learn to shave with his razors and pass them down to my two sons which are 5 and 4. I'm looking forward to soaking up all the info I can. Thanks.

There are lots of vendors on this Forum who would be happy to get the razors fixed-up.

The Gillette should work OK -- just find some blades for it. There are 'blade sampler packs' available on the Internet. I like the Feather blades, but some people find them too sharp. In the beginning, _I_ found them too harsh.

One warning:

. . . When you shave with the Gillette, _don't_ use any pressure.

The double-edge blades (most of them) will be happy to scrape off a layer of skin, if you force them against your face. That's one major difference between the old DE blades (and safety razors) and the new multi-blade, lubricated cartridges.

Welcome to SRP. That's great to have some family blades. Do you have any relatives who still use a straight? I don't think I've yet heard of someone learning to straight shave from another person who did it all his life. That's part of the fun here, I guess, is everyone being a part of everyone else's rediscovery.

With any luck some old family hones will resurface too.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I woke up extra early this morning with great anticipation and excitement, couldn't hardly sleep last night. I got out my Pawpaw's mug, brush and safety razor then filled the sink with hot water. I lathered with a brush and shaved with a de safety razor for the first time. It was awesome. I could almost see my PawPaw smiling back at me in the mirror. I'll never buy another cartridge again. Im looking forward to getting his straight razors like new again and learning that way of shaving too. Thanks for letting me share.
