    Default Hello from Augusta, GA

Hey all. I'm originally from western PA, but currently living in Augusta, GA. I've been in the US Army for a little over 13 years. My hobbies include playing piano, reading, playing video games, and building computers. I'm an avid scotch and brandy drinker and like the occasional cigar to go along with. I'm also starting to get into home brewing my own beer. I guess I could say I'm getting into straight razor shaving because I'm tired of just throwing money at disposables and, when you get down to it, I'm kind of an old fashioned kind of guy and the whole idea of a straight razor shave appeals to me. I've got a 11/16 full hollow round tip vintage on the way along with soap, a best badger brush, an illinois #127 strop, and....probably most importantly, a styptic pencil lol. I figure I'll take my time and spend a few weeks shaving with the disposable and using the brush and soap and practice good face preparation, getting a good lather, and stretching my face. Then I'll move on to the easy planes and slowly build from there. I've already checked out a lot of videos and plan to keep on watching them until it's ingrained in my memory long before I ever touch razor to face. Anyways...what a long winded introduction! Thanks for providing this website...it has such a wealth of information on it and I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions once I truly begin.

    Welcome to SRP.
It sounds to me like you have the right way of approaching this
Your kit sounds to be a good one to start off with.
All I can say is good luck, and ask away should any questions arise as you go along!

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

So my razor arrived on friday. Actually seeing one of these in person is really intimidating! I can't wait for the rest of the kit to get here though.

Yes the first shave is intimidating, but you'll get through it and you'll get hooked. Welcome aboard!

just out of curiosity...i had a thought this morning. I've always been a right-handed only shaver. most of the information i've seen mentions changing hands. if i shave my entire face using only my right hand, i'd only be using one side of the blade. would this be a bad thing, or should i start learning to shave my left side with my left hand now while i'm still using the disposable and practicing beard preparation?

Keep it stroped and it shouldn't be a problem.
I am pright handed and it felt a little awkward at first but doing the left hand side of your face with your left hand is pretty natural. It only took a couple times to have it down pat. Then when I tried to do my LH side with my right hand I cut myself. LOL

sorry if it's a little blurry...the cell phone camera isnt the best in the world unless lighting conditions are absolutely perfect.
