New here and basically new to straight razors

Hey all, after a while of paying too much money for disposable razors and not getting much use to justify the cost I started looking for other methods for shaving. As odd as it seemed to me I decided to try straight razors. My parents actually had a Geo. Wostenholm & Son razor that was from my great great grandfather, so that was more incentive to use it. I didn't figure on finding something that has been in my family for such a long time. From the research I had done the blade is supposed to be one of the better ones from my understanding. Anyways, most of my information I found on getting started came from this site, so I decided to join to learn more. I hope to learn more from the history aspect and techniques of the straight razor. I know from the short time I have been using mine I am happy with the change :).

Thanks for the welcomes! I don't think I have ever had a shave that was so close from anything else, so I am definitely enjoying it.

Thanks! Haha, I'm pretty sure I will never forget how nervous I was using the razor for the first time and how close it was.

Thanks. I have two strops that were also with the razor. One just says "finish" on it and no brand, and the other is a Shell Horsehide 840 which seems to be a lot rougher. Both were stored well and seem to be keeping the blade in good shape so far. I don't have any other straight razors to compare to though.

I wish I had a family heirloom to shave with. Hoepfully, my future sons will be able to pass what I have currently along to future generations.

If you can shave comfortably, the blade is sharp. It's nice to use gear that connects to your own history.

It is nice to use something connected to the family. It doesn't seem like there is as many items anymore that can survive long enough to be handed down. I am getting a comfortable shave and have been getting a lot better about not cutting myself, so I guess the blade is sharpened well. Now I want to get a couple more to have a small collection to use and hand down someday.
