Question Total N00b here. I know nothing!

I've been reading some of the beginners forums, and I still don't know. I guess answering the question of why I want to get into this is, that I love the nostalgia of it, I'm tired of using my old rusty disposable plastic razors, and I think it's just plain cool. I don't plan on making this a hobby since I already have too many.
I'm a 27 year old guy and I usually just shave dry or with water in the shower with a cheap-o plastic razor.

I have no idea what all these terms are and would love to be pointed toward some definitions of what all the tools are and what they are used for. Also, if there any specific instructional videos available online that anyone knows are correct, that would be helpful, too.

I'm on a tight budget and just want to get started to learn the techniques. Does anyone know of a shop I can walk into and look at supplies/razors to buy and hold? I'm in Phoenix, AZ. Any help would be great.

Hello, and welcome to the forums!

If your looking for information you've certainly come to the right place! the sheer knowledge available on this website is staggering when beginning, but press through its worth it. I wish you the best of luck in not making this a habit, shaving goes from a chore to something you look forward to doing everyday and take great pleasure in. I would recommended getting a starter pack from Dovo or any of the many available websites such as Italianbarber.com and even in the vendor section here on SRP! I do hope for your bank account you dont end up with RAD, SAD(Razor acquisition Disorder, Soap Acquisition disorder), as for local Shops occasionally you can find straight razor at your local knife shops or chains (my local one is called house of knives) and they offer starter packs.

    Have fun and good luck

If you know that you know nothing, at least you know something, and that is a good place to start.

Hi, Wes, and welcome to SRP! The Wiki section will be of invaluable assistance to you re: learning the vocabulary and implements of cutthroat shaving. It'll take some time to wade through it, but it's time well spent!

You've come to the right place - none of us know that much either, but together we manage to work things out, and we all contribute in our own small ways to the accumulated knowledge. I am sure you will as well.

    I second the advice:

. . . Read the Wiki stuff for beginners.

It will get you started on the right track.

For low-priced complete "starter kits" try Whipped Dog Straight Razor Shaving Equipment .

For low-priced razors, the "Classifieds" here (and some things in the Vendors' Corner) may have some blades.

Welcome aboard! When I came here a long time ago, the only thing I knew was that I butchered my face with a Pakistani special and needed to figure out what I was doing wrong. Took a few years to abrade away those scars, even though I have a couple more left from other causes.
