second times the charm?

I've been something of a lurker for a while but I've finally decided to take the plunge. I've been using a DE for a while but I'm enjoying learning to use a straight razor. I was going through my dad's pocket knife collection and found the razors he used, along with my grandfather's and great grandfather's. they're all in great shape and just needed some touching up to shave with. Its a nice feeling to use something they used and keeps me in touch with my past. Plus I don't have to spent $12 at the grocery store for those plastic monstrosities anymore. I'm looking forward to learning all I can and enjoying this new passion.

Send them out to a pro to be sharpened. Then you'll know what a sharp razor is supposed to be like and the bevels will be set right. Once the bevels are right, keeping them sharp is easy and you can do it yourself. Don't worry about learning to hone until much later. Just learn to strop and shave for now.

That's good advice. That way you'll know what a truly shave-ready razor feels like, which will give you a better idea as to what you're chasing if and when you do start honing. Check the classified here:

Thats definately something I plan on doing, plus they could use a little sprucing up.

For sure. I taught myself how to hone, but I didn't take any chances at first and sent my razors out to get honed. That way I have a benchmark to compare the razors I honed to. Glad I did!

Same here on the honing thing !

I have a friend that showed me one he got from his grandfather. He asked me to hone it for him. When I got it home I noticed the edge looked (not warped) but like a wave. It had a frown with 2 bumps near the ends. One side showed more bevel than the other and it was way over my skill level. It should be on it's way to Glen's soon. He has been a great help to me as have the other experts in here.

Yeah, Glen is awesome. I actually sent my Dubl Duck to him to be honed, and the thing came back SCARY sharp (in a good way, of course!! ) :)

His youtube vids have been invaluable as well....defnitely have learned a lot!!
