Thanked: 2second times the charm?
I've been something of a lurker for a while but I've finally decided to take the plunge. I've been using a DE for a while but I'm enjoying learning to use a straight razor. I was going through my dad's pocket knife collection and found the razors he used, along with my grandfather's and great grandfather's. they're all in great shape and just needed some touching up to shave with. Its a nice feeling to use something they used and keeps me in touch with my past. Plus I don't have to spent $12 at the grocery store for those plastic monstrosities anymore. I'm looking forward to learning all I can and enjoying this new passion.

Thanked: 57Send them out to a pro to be sharpened. Then you'll know what a sharp razor is supposed to be like and the bevels will be set right. Once the bevels are right, keeping them sharp is easy and you can do it yourself. Don't worry about learning to hone until much later. Just learn to strop and shave for now.

That's good advice. That way you'll know what a truly shave-ready razor feels like, which will give you a better idea as to what you're chasing if and when you do start honing. Check the classified here:

for members who offer honing services. They'll set you on the right track.
Good luck!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 1184Same here on the honing thing !
I have a friend that showed me one he got from his grandfather. He asked me to hone it for him. When I got it home I noticed the edge looked (not warped) but like a wave. It had a frown with 2 bumps near the ends. One side showed more bevel than the other and it was way over my skill level. It should be on it's way to Glen's soon. He has been a great help to me as have the other experts in here.Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
