Hello from Texas

Hey folks,

New straight razor shaver here from Texas. I'm a programmer by day and guitar fanatic by night. Now I can add straight razor shaving and its accoutrements to my list of addictions.

So, why straight razor and why now? Well, I was watching TV and one of the 1,000 doomsday prepper shows was on and I started to think of all the things that I wouldn't be able to do without the modern conveniences that shelter us. Shaving came to mind and after a quick look around the internet at straight razor shaving sites and I was hooked. Something about the art and the danger involved and the idea of owning one or multiple well-crafted blades really drew me in. I've been using Gillette razors since the peach fuzz started to get too long (roughly twenty years) and it felt like time to take the training wheels off.

Hope to learn a lot from everyone here and share what I find along the way as well.

Welcome aboard from a UT alum and former TX resident. Tell us about your straight razor (pics even better) and accessories (strop, hones if any, etc).

I've only started shaving with a straight, about 10 shaves so far, and bought a cheap razor to learn honing on. Shaved with it a couple times, first time not so good - not sharp enough - but second time went pretty well.

Thanks, weaselsrippedmyflesh. Sorry, I should've known to list my kit. Currently, I'm testing the waters with a Parker SR1 shavette with Shark blades that my wife got me that for Christmas before I invest in a true straight razor. I'm one shave in and everything went fine--I just started with my cheeks to get the hang of it. I honestly haven't been that antsy about shaving since I started. I'm using Proraso for all my creams, soaps, and aftershaves. Thanks to a thread on this forum, I found that olive oil and coconut oil mixed make a great pre shave. I added clove oil for scent and its antiseptic properties. I throw on rubbing alcohol afterwards and I find that, that keeps bumps and razor burn down. I have a badger hair brush and Feather razors on the way to try out. I doubt it will be long before I switch to a real straight and have to get the rest of the tools.
