well here i am...lol

here a little back round on me.
i grew up in NJ. my father was a straight razor only guy. he had 2 razors that he swore by. (wish i knew what ones) about 15 years ago just before my son was born my father passed away. we (my sisters and i along with my mother) are certain we buried my father with one of his blades. and have been looking for the other one sense early 2012. the hope was that i would be able to use it as my first straight blade. well it still has not shown up and i am all but giving up on finding it.
i will more than likely go ahead and just pick up one from whipped dog as a starter kit. not the way i wanted to start but oh well. i gotta start some were. i watched my father shave both his face and hole head with his straight my hole life. oddly he never taught me how to shave..
by the time in my own life i needed to perform this mundane task i just bought my self disposable multi blade shick/bic things and got the chore done.. well i'm 36 years old now my son is 15 and he will need to learn to shave shortly.... (see were i'm going with this?)
i presently still use the multi bladed disposable blades for both my face and head. i remember my father standing in front of the sink happily shaving away. he even told me that a "good shave is a lost art" but i think that was just because he was a artist by trade lol.... his father was also a straight blade shaver (but just the face) so i'm sure a few of you see were i am coming from. i have been reading and watching a crap ton of videos on the straight blade. i found this forum and a few others but this one looked like the right for me. so again "here i am"

great history shame about misplacing his other razor... i still shave with my dad and granddad's straight at least one is always in my rotation.

oddly i grew up in NJ as well and that is where 90% of the family still live.

do you know of any brick and mortar places to go and buy a blade from in NJ? or just talk shop kinda place?

sorry i was not clear... i grew up in warren county but have not lived there in decades, i do visit though. As for stores i have not a clue but there are a bunch of guys on the other side of the state that might know they just had a meetup last weekend.

Welcome. It's not clear from your post if you've ever had a staright razor shave of any type. I would suggest that you find a barber who will give you a straight razor shave and see if you like it. If you do, that shave will also give you a baseline on which to judge your future efforts.

After that, there is an Art of Shaving in Paramus to get a look/see at the shiny new ones. Be warned that the edge that they have are from the factory and will still need some attention from someone with honing skills to give you that barber type shave.

You can get some shaving gear and soap at Target and Walmart. I think your best bet is to try Larry at the Whipped Dog and get the starter kit. Skip Ebay. Or try one of the vendors here.

well here it is. i found in our garage. behind my fathers tool box. it has been 15 years sense the lid of his old tool box got closed. and when i closed it i found a inch or more of dust covering the box which was wrapped in a yellowed brittle piece of paper sitting just behind the lid......i wish i had taken pics during the find but honestly emotions got the best of me....
the box is dated "9/3/74 r" from Becker's cutlery,grinding,sharpening 62 n 12th st. phila. pa.
the paper had some writing on it as well but thats gone :( oops
i would think with some work i could take it on myself and then send it out for sharpening (if needed) it will shave now (of course i tried it on my arm ;)
the question i have is who makes it? and was it a good one? if it holds more value than just sentimental i will of course be sending it out to be restored. but other wise I'm up for it......
any thoughts?

That's REALLY rusty, I wouldn't try it until all that red rust is off of there, that's a tetanus breeding ground.

The symbol on the sales is "Kissing Cranes" . It is a good quality known razor maker.
The main question is just how deep is the rust along the edge. You an remove the red surfae rust but the pitting underneath will remain unless it is sanded out.
Look in the Wiki and the workshop forum for "hand sanding". That will be the place to start.

right on.. i promise i will not....
i cleaned a small area of steal on the stem of the blade (at the base were the blade meets the handle?)
. it showes a #22 then two birds (flamingos?)
then "Robert klaas " then what looks like "solingen"
there is also some really nice patterning on the back side (the part you can see even when closed?)

Welcome and great story great find. I am hoping it cleans up nice for you and you find out why your father swore by it.

Hey welcome to the forum! I really happy for you that you found the razor, I know I would be happy, rust or no rust :) It looks to me like a Dubl Duck. A pretty sought after razor from what I know!

Hope it cleans up OK and most of all hope it shaves well!

If the edge is not to pitted or honeycombed, it will probably clean up ok. I've done at least one that rusty before

a little steal wool reveled what looks like a shield with crossed swords and a torch in the center. it reads "prima solingen" in a ribbon on both sides of the shield

Yeah I know the emblem you are talking about alright, have seen it on a few Dovo blades. Basically means "Top Quality/Finest Solingen". Solingen is the place it was made in Germany. Randy is spot on about Kissing Crane for sure though, if you look it up you will find razors and knives with that emblem on them.
