Hello everyone,

My name is Brandon and I'm from Saskatchewan Canada. Happy to be on the forum amongst so many with such an abundance of knowledge. I bought my first straight razor nearly a year ago. Since then I have made quite a few attempts to shave with it seeing little success. I am hoping to be able to gain enough knowledge and ambition through this forum to pursue my straight shaving. Thank you to everyone in advance for all the help I'm sure I'll find.

Welcome from a fellow Canadian. Shaving with a straight has quite a learning curve...give it some time, and there's nothing wrong with finishing up with a DE or cartridge until you develop your skill set. There's a ton of info here to help you on your way. What type of straight do you have?

I have a cheaper straight which i believe is made by dovo for col. Conk. It has plain black plastic scales and the blade says solingen best quality.

Depending on where you purchased your razor, it's probably not shave ready and just has the factory ground edge. I'd suggest sending it to be honed and then you'll know you have a sharp edge and eliminate any guesswork there. Then you can focus on your technique

I did have the razor honed by a fairly reputable dealer about three months after its purchase. I may have to send it in again as i may have ruined the edge with improper stropping and whatnot.

That's a good idea. If you're not sure about the edge, then you won't be sure whether problems encountered when shaving are due to the edge, technique, or face prep. This way you're at least eliminating one of the variables.

When you say 'fairly reputable', was it a specialist straight razor dealer, or a specialist knife dealer? If it's the latter I'd strongly suggest sending it to someone who specializes in razors as it's a whole different technique.

Apart from that, keep at it and it will get better. There's a TON of info on this site, and we're always happy to answer any specific questions you may have. Good luck!

I've only been at it for a couple of months but am steadily improving, mainly due to the wealth of information in this forum.
