Thread: Hello from montreal.

Hi gents, i decided to try straight razor shaving because of my grand father. I found is old h.böker king cutter and after that i ran to my razor shop i bought some equipment.

-Dovo Best Quality
-Proraso Soap & After Shave
-Vie-Long Brush
-Dovo Strop


After long time reading the forum i took the Dovo and shaved myself, everything goes well but i'm having trouble to shave under my chin.
By the way the Dovo already got some stain on the blade i know its a budget razor but i am pretty disappointed.


I would like to have some advice on the King Cutter, is it worth the money to restore it? Thank you guys and any advice is much welcome.

Looks to me she just needs a good honing
I have the same in square point that was my grandfathers.

That's the big problem with a brick & mortar store, you have to deal with higher overhead just to keep a store front running, which means harder to compete with online shops.

King Cutters are fantastic razors - I have two of them so far - so it would be well worth the effort to have that one restored. However, due to its sentimental value, make sure that if you do opt for restoration you send it to a pro. You don't want just anybody messing around with Grandpa's razor! And if you choose to do it yourself, don't go anywhere near that gold wash with metal polish or anything similar. It will disappear in a flash. The member service section of the classifieds is a great place to start looking for restoration or honing services:

There is a cigar store on Sainte Catherine called Vasco that has some quality soaps, etc. I'm pretty sure they also carry razors/brushes etc., but to be honest when I was there a while back I just had soap on the brain so I wasn't paying attention to the other stuff. Anyway, if you're downtown, it would be worth checking out.

EDIT: forgot to say - don't worry about having trouble under the chin. That's a very common trouble spot for a lot of guys, and will get easier with time and practice. If you search the forum, you'll find plenty of threads about that with lots of suggestions. But in short, prep well, stretch your skin, pay attention to your blade angle (raise the spine about two spine widths from your skin which should = an angle of around 30 degrees) and keep your pressure light.

I will not attempt to do this restoration by myself not on this baby, ill be furious if the gold inscription fade out. Thank you for the advice!

I understand, but i would be rather happy to pay a little more and see the razor in my hand and feel it or smell the shaving soap before buying it. But maybe the straight razor market is not big enough to have a business in montreal.

You will see that Montrealers are growing in numbers on this forum.
We should surely organize a meeting in the near future.

I would be glad to come at a meeting and meet some gents who have a lot more experience then i have.
