Wow....I really like that style, well thought out. Notify me if you decide to offer them to the public, with the holidays coming I may add this to my Santa list!
bill :tu
If you got the time send me a pm, thanks.
Okay...will do.
I realize they don't look much different yet but here they are after the first (bisque) firing. They aren't mud any more, and they didn't explode in the kiln (yay!). It takes about 8 hrs to gently go from room temp up to about 1800 degrees F. The next firing will be for the glaze and it takes longer as it goes up to about 2100 degrees F.

Looking good,But it needs a lid,to keep the lather that much warmer.
If you put a lid on it, where will the brush go?
Make the lid optional .:)
Ditto on what Nightblade says...
And it's looking good. Did you get my PM about color pref?
Aaron
Hi Aaron;
I did get your PM. I think you were interested in the MF59 Royal Blue. I currently have some MS20 Royal Blue that I wanted to try, so I am going to try that on one of the two above scuttles this weekend, which will give us an idea what Royal Blues will look like (I can get some MF59 for you ).
I'll put my vote in for this color. Chocolate with cream rim. It reminds me of the old coffee mug my grandparents had.

Nice they are coming along very well. Very exciting
PM here also please
PM me too please... Thank you! They look AWESOME!
PMs on the way, and prototypes in the kiln even as we speak (fingers crossed!)
Okay, here's pics... I will follow it up with an email of what my current thoughts are now that I have tried 'em out.
I am really excited! But now I get to pick apart my own design (isn't that the whole idea of prototypeing?)
1. Deeper is better (Hey Nightblade, you were right!!!). The smaller scuttle has a deeper bowl and it works much better for whipping up a lather, even though its bowl is smooth inside. Because its smaller , it seems much better suited to my smaller Omega boar brush than my larger badger. The bigger scuttle (blue) has a shallower bowl with ridges, but with a shallow bowl the lather falls off the side.
2. With a two piece unit, you can take the inner bowl out and use the outer part as a traditional mug, but I think it would be easier to use with the two units fused together. With them seperate, you find yourself holding the rim of the inner bowl with one hand while using the other hand for the brush. That means that the process takes place with the scuttle on the sink or table. If you want to hold it in your hand then the two piece is less practical.
3. I was worried that the smaller water volume of a unit with deep inner bowl might not retain enough heat to keep the lather warm, but I find that that not to be a problem for me.
4. In general, the handles are maybe a little larger than I would like them. They certainly work well, but its just aesthetics... Some may prefer the larger ones but I think that I will try slightly smaller as a rule unless someone wants big.
So, the next one will (hopefully) be about the size of the larger one, with deper bowl and with the two pieces fused together. I also have a different idea for raised ridges (like traffic bumps) radiating out from the middle on the inside of the bowl.
Still looking for comments, ideas etc!
The ultimate scuttle would be a g5 on steriods.Take that design and make it to hold 4 cups of water and put a little of you own twist to it and you will sell a ton of them,get crackin for the holidays!!!!!With a lid of course.
+1!! (well, almost i think)
As long as it stays a ¨dgstr8¨ design, no probs.
Keep the apothecary handle, though.
Absolutely!!!
Wonderful work so far;it keeps getting better and better!!! :rock:

Definately bigger. I don't know how big this styling can go without having to put handles on both sides as it would be pretty heavy!
They are looking very nice. I personally like the large handle> the glaze came out nice as well.
thanks guys! seems like we are alll still kinda on the same page. So with the votes favouring a lid it looks like I'll have to try that too. do you envision leaving the brush out of the scuttle when the lid is on?
I dont know if this has been mentioned, but.....
can you make a lid with a small "cut out" for the brush? Kind of like the old style sugar bowls that had a slot in the lid so the small spoon could stay inside of the sugar? Would this work? I dont see a tonne of heat escaping if the bristles are inside the lather, and the lid is on.
Good idea? Bad idea?
if you need testers...I'm in toronto...domestic shipping!!:):)
love the pics
For the issue of the inner bowl moving around, why don't you put a notch in with the lid fitted to it? That way it won't move around and you don't need to hold it. Just throwing it out there :)
I'm still tending towards a one piece unit for several reasons;
1. The thing that appeals to me the most about straight edge shaving is its simple elegance. Its about as basic as you can get. While a two piece unit may seem more versatile by allowing you to use the outer shell as a lather bowl/shaving mug, it seems to me that by trying to be many things it becomes less optimized for one thing... sorta like a 1970s stereo system with built in turntable/8 track player/radio receiver instead of single components. A one piece unit is just a scuttle. Hopefully a real good scuttle. If someone wants a lather bowl with apothecary handle I can make it for them as a seperate item.
2. In a two piece unit the inner bowl must, by design, rest against the outer bowl near the top, but in a fused unit there can be a space between the two bowls all the way up the sides to allow for more water.
3. In a one piece unit there is one less piece to fumble/drop and break.
However, I am still open to discussion, and a lid is still possible for a one piece.
Dave
Actually... it also occured to me, on further thought, that if I go big or go home, the inner biowl would be heavier than in a small unit and therefore less likely to move around, so seperate pieces may still be practical. And, as for holding it in the hand as opposed to on the table/sink, a larger unit would be heavier and would hold more water which would make it even more heavier, so it would likely get used on the table/sink anyway.
well I guess you hav eto work thru all these thought processes!
Dave
Razorback;
Actually I have started on a larger one for you, but I have to head to Ontario this weekend so I may be delayed a little bit. I will send you a PM with more details when I get a chance. For the others that have followed this thread and expressed interest in having me make a scuttle for them, I am confident now that the next ones will be "marketable" and I will contact each of you by PM to confirm your interest/wants/desires/colors etc. Pls feel free to PM me as well.
Regards, Dave
Hello sir.....Been kinda outta commission and just getting back in the swing of things here.Just read your last design idea and thought I might throw another cent in the chat. How bout this.The first apothecary mug you made,the smaller one.Take that same size and add another half size to the mug height...keep the spout and all(make sure the spout has a nice spill proof size to it,seems like all the scuttles I've seen have really small holes).Keep the handle the same size as it looks sturdy enough as opposed to the larger handle,make it a single unit with hollow walls like you were talking about,no lid(or as stated before,make lid optional) and you could make the optional lid with a crescent cut to accommodate a brush to resting in the bowl eh ?..Done ta da ? :hmmm:
And it still would be able to be used as just a lather bowl if you wanted...just dont add water is all. no moving parts to break or swallow or poke an eye out.:):)
