Just wondering if anyone uses a vintage shaving stand like the one pictured? I think it would be really cool to have one in the bedroom and use it on lazy summer sunday afternoons...

Very handsome. I would need some surface area on which to sit my soap/brush & razor.
Wow! Although I'm a BIG fan of modern plumbing, I'm interested to know more about that piece.
I should say the shaving stand pictured isn't mine, it is or was for sale on the 'net. The photo isn't mine, either. It looks cool, though. There appears to be a little tray at the back for soaps, etc. I believe in times passed one would shave in one's room; of course the whole idea of a scuttle comes from not having hot water to hand. The jug and bowl weren't included in the sale; but were available separately. I like the candle stick holders and little towel racks. The legs are of a style called 'barley twist' I believe, or something like that. I have a sideboard in similar style. I guess it would be reasonably easy to make one, for those with the skills, esp if straight legs or turned legs were used. The bowls and jugs are quite readily available in antique shops in Australia, and the advantage would be that you could make the stand to suit the water set (I think that's what the jug and bowl are called), it may be harder to find a jug and bowl the right size to suit a stand that didn't come with a water set.
Here's mine ! Hope you like ! I like use it the Sunday morning. I love it !

Bushdoctor,
I absolutely love that set up. It's something out of Charles Dickens. Or I can see Raphael Sabatini using it every morning as he wrote Scaramouch. Ah, yes, love that. Thanks for making my morning.
And Carl, my good friend, thanks for bringing up the subject. I like the photo you show, too. All good stuff, gentlemen. Forget the fancy sinks and faucets. Bring on the real stuff — of long ago.
those stands are really neat. that second one is amazing. the combo of what looks to be marble and metal really match the bowl and picher. and to have all the shaving gear on display is easy on the eyes. would the bowl be for washing face when done or what? i almost NEVER get my razor wet . it should help exstend the life of it by not getting rust under the scales by the pivot pin. those are my thoughts anyways. perfect example is that when my dad gave me my great grandfathers razor you could tell it had been used dry for a long time . there was alot of soap build up in the small dimples of the scales and once i got it wet to give it a good scrub down the smell of soap that had been on that razor ,locked in a box for the last 50 years sprang to life. great thread here fellers.
Thier both amazing!! Beautiful antique's!! I still use my ol' stand by, the sink in the Lu, works great but not nearly as elagant!![lot's of !! there, ain't there!][sorry]
as ever tinkersd
I often see such stands at Flea Markets and in Antique stores but both pictures are wonderful specimens! I must admit an antique shaving stand is on my "One of these days for my man cave" list. In fact, a man cave is on the same list :)
Well Hellrazor308,
the bowl was concepted for washing the face and is well before time of indoors plumbing.
If you look on right side of the marble, you can see a red gum ring that I use to clean the razor during shaving, and when I've finish to shave I clean the razor with alcool for degrease the blade from soap and fat, in this way I keep my razor free from rust and I've not to wait long time before to dry oneself.
Oh my gosh! I think I bid on that very one! That said, I never did get it and had since forgotten about it! Until now lol.
Lazy summer days indeed - it was my intention to place it in my screened in patio so I could shave outside and watch the world go by...
To Bushdoctor. Red Gum Ring?? Confused on how you would used this to clean a razor? Would you please enlighten.
Oh yes, is really easy to do, I scrape the razor on gum scraping ring to clean it from lather. I add some pics and hope you can understand like function.

Bushdoctor,
Love the stand (and Carl, I like yours too! You should definitely buy it!) and this gum ring is completely new to me. Was it originally intended as a shaving accessory? Looks a lot like a diaphragm, but why a diaphragm would come with a nice cut-glass holder eludes me.
Thanks for sharing your great, old-world stuff.
I almost never rinse my razors, I try to keep them as dry as possible; like you. I think people would use this sort of setup a lot years ago, esp where one let a room in a boarding house, I imagine, for just general washing too. But I'd use the bowl just like I use the bathroom sink; to soak and warm the bowl and brush and wet the wash cloth in at the end to wash the lather off my face...
Nice..! Very classic and nostalgic.............:)
So, I ended up not getting a shave stand as such, but this English oak side table and this Meakin set. Budget (and my other recent purchases) dictated.
The water set (is that what they're called?) is a basin, a pitcher or jug, a chamber pot (not shown) and a soap dish. I've put the Madame Scodioli 'Boheme' soap in the dish. The dish is rather large, in fact I'm not even sure it IS a soap dish, but it will work as one. I also need a mirror.
My plan is to use this tomorrow afternoon (I'll borrow the bathroom mirror). I then intend to shave here each weekend, on Sunday afternoon, and then try and make a transition to ONLY shaving here. I'll shower as usual in the morning, but after that, one doesn't need a LOT of water to shave; and I'd like to shave very much like they used to in all ways. My new Neil Miller strop will look very nice next to this hanging from a brass hook in the bedroom wall.
(PS, that new thread on Shaving Stands and this one would be good melded together :-))

Looks nice, the washing set is really cool, but I believe the table is not so comfortable to use because is not enough high, so before to buy a shaving mirror, I suggest you to looking for something like in pictures below and don't have hurry to found it, maybe you can ask to some carpenter to build one for you.
But if my impression aren't right and you just looking for a mirror I suggest you to buy one extendible wall mounted shaving mirror.

Wow! That's really cool. I'm glad I asked the question about these stands!
What are the two little holes for in the front, do you think?
How does the mirror pop up? Does it slide down the back?
My little table is not a bad height, but then again I haven't actually used it yet. A washstand I saw advertised actually seemed to me too tall. I'm only 5 foot 8, so I don't need a tall stand :-)
The extendible mirror sound perfect. I like this one Gold extendable shaving mirror, bathroom shaving mirror UK
Yes, the mirror slide down the back as you can see in the close picture with washing bowl where the mirror is closed, a very nice piece and very well planned.
The two holes, I think are for soap cup or soap dish or can be used for aftershave bottle like this in the picture below.
About extendible mirror, I find gold color a bit kitch ( but is only my liking ), I prefer chrome that is more like the vintage one.

Yes,you right and this is the coolest thing, the spirit burner for heat water, and I put the hot water where ironstone cup is dwelled so keep the lather warm for long time.
That's beautiful
Here is mine.

I finally tracked down a rubber shaving drip bowl so I don't need to constantly walk to a sink to clean a razor mid-shave. It should be in soon.
Waow:
Then only thing I can say is Waow to all of this stands.
K
I'll see your Waow and raise you a Yarrr!
What more needs to be said?

These stands are all great guys and there is a lot to be said about shaving without a running faucet.Hearing the buttered toast sound of the razor going along your face is kinda neat ! Oh and Bushdoctor...off topic, but I like your avatar. I'm dating myself but I used to love watching The Wacky Races with Dick Dasterdly and Muttly on Saturday Mornings (sigh) I'm gettin older.
Re-invigorating this shaving stand thread; I love using my little spot in my bedroom as the weather gets warmer...
